Dry & cracking finger tips, lotions not helping?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Although I apply lotion both morning and night to my hands I'm getting really dry finger tips, so much so they have become very sensitive to flipping through papers and stretching (making or releasing a fist) them is tight and is beginning to rip the skin, even using this laptop touch pad is uncomfortable.

I've tried a few different lotions over the years:

* Corn Huskers
* Bag Balm
* Udder cream/Udderly smooth
* Jergen's
* Some 'intensive care' samples

I live in a dry climate, I'm sure it contributes. I also apply benzoyl peroxide as part of a facial regimen (acne preventive), which can be very drying, but I put lotion on just following that after washing my hands. I also wash my hands a lot, which contributes to the issue I'm sure, but I use Softsoap's milk & honey moisturizing liquid soap, it seems gentle enough though I don't know if it actually moisturizes.

It's growing into a real issue, I have a tingling sensation throughout day now; very uncomfortable. Not sure what to do, what else to try, some thoughts?

    Sounds like you should see a doctor - you've posted about other medical problems in other threads - all of which could be related.

    I doubt your skin problem can be solved from the outside in (i.e. applying something externally)

    Sounds like you need to sort it out from the inside out - maybe through a change in diet, supplements, etc.

    definitely stop washing your hands so much. Apply your face stuff with gloves on instead.

    my boyfriend has something similar. He uses Bodyshop 'Hemp' hand cream and it works a treat, has to use it at least once a day.

    dry dead cracking fingertips

    Hi,
    I would like to share this story with you hoping that it might help many like me. I had painful occurrences of cracking finger tips, bleeding and peeling skin on my hand. I went to the skin specialist and she told me that I have psoriasis and gave me rubs, ointment and told me that I will have to use it for rest of my life. This went on for about 1 year and I would get these bouts about once every month and would last for about three weeks. For some other unrelated reasons, I came to know that drinking water (about 8-10 glasses) of water is good for me. So I started drinking more water than normally I did. It has been since last three months that my fingers have not cracked and the roughness is almost gone. Just to make sure that the water is the cause. I stopped drinking this extra water for a fifteen days and the symptoms started to reappear but not like before. One more thing to mention that I used to drink about two to three cups of coffee and about two to three alcoholic drinks per day. I have reduced my coffee drinking by about 90% and I have about one drink a day now. May be this has something to do with it.
    Hope this helps. No harm in trying anyway because this amount of water is good for you anyway.

    Hey vrodkar,
    Welcome to TheSite - good advice. It's always worth just having a look at the date a thread has been posted as this one is a year old. Gonna close it now.
