Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
all of a sudden my pc wont connect to the internet, tells me something about the firewall or proxy settings, so i tried closing zone alarm, internet started working again, so i restarted zone alarm and my internet went down again and kept getting pop up messages saying access as been denied to what ever web site i was on at the time and msn, tried clicking on more info which leads to a pop up from zone alarm which gets blocked :banghead:

seemed to have happened all of a sudden upon start up of the pc, yet no changes have been made to the settings of zone alarm, and i dunno what else to do, so im currently surfing without a firewall so help as soon as possible would be good please people :(

Zonealarm has been a pain on most of the computers i've had it on in the past few months so i've gotten rid of it now.

I'd suggest doing the same, getting AVG for virus scanning and then wait for somone else to suggest a firewall for you (My home network is sufficient protection for me)

Due to the recent lope hole discoverd a patch was released by microsoft that fix's the hole. But makes your computer unable to connect to the net.

Not sure how to fix it, but someone said to just do a system restore.

Zone Alarm isn't particularly great, I recommend Comodo, which is free.

I can confirm that it is most likely that your problem is due to the Microsoft patch that knocks out some ZoneAlarm users offline. I've just come back from a friends house whom asked me to sort out his internet that wasn't working and it wsa down to this issue with Zonealarm.

The easiest way to do it is just download the updated version of Zonealarm Basic Firewall as that is the patch to fix the problem.

have pulled this from a support newsgroup i use

If you use ZoneAlarm you will lose your Internet connection after
installing the latest security updates from MS - KB951748 in particular.

    The way around it is:-

If the windows update changed the usual needed files for
networking/internet, then the ZA will not see the changes and continue
to use the previously known files and ignore the newer files. Even
though the file names and locations are still the same from before, now
the file size and checksums no longer match.

To solve this, just reset the ZA database and the ZA will be "fresh" as
    when it was first installed:

    # Boot your computer into the Safe Mode
    # Navigate to the c:\windows\internet logs folder
    # Delete the backup.rdb, iamdb.rdb, *.ldb and the tvDebug files in the
    folder
    # Clean the Recycle Bin
    # Reboot into the normal mode
    # ZA will be just like new with no previous settings or data

Once this is finished, reboot back into the normal mode and in the new
network found windows, set the new network to Trusted.
Then do this to ensure the ZA is setup properly:

Make sure your DNS and DHCP server IP's are in your Firewall's Trusted
zone. Finding DNS and DCHP servers, etc

    1. Go to Run and type in command and hit 'ok', and in the command then
type in ipconfig /all then press the enter key. In the returned data
list will be a line DNS and DHCP Servers with the IP address(s) listed
out to the side. Make sure there is a space between the ipconfig and the
/all, and the font is the same (no capitals).

    2. In ZA on your machine on the Firewall, open the Zones tab, click Add
and then select IP Address. Make sure the Zone is set to Trusted. Add
    the DNS IP(s) .

    3. Click OK and Apply. Then do the same for the DHCP server.

    4. The localhost (127.0.0.1) must be listed as Trusted.

    5. The Generic Host Process (svchost.exe) as seen in the Zone Alarm's
Program's list must have server rights for the Trusted Zone.
Plus it must have both Trusted and Internet Access.

otherwise you can lower the setting in ZA for internet zone from High to Medium
    Or
    Uninstall the fix.

Or just briefly disable your firewall, go to www.zonealarm.co.uk and download the new free version, disconnect from the net, uninstall your old zonealarm, reboot as required, install new zonealarm, reboot as required, and enjoy!:)
