I went to London last night for a meal out with my friend wearing a dress with a coat over the top that wasn't revealing in the least and as i walked through my home town to get to the train station i had blokes just really obviously stare and some weirdo in a car shouted 'i know you're young but get out your fanny'. I mean..WTF?!? i dont mean to sound like im being a man-hater and going off on one but seriously!! when has this been okay just because a girl is wearing a dress? maybe they think you will be complimented (tho how the guy in the car can think THAT is a compliment is beyond me) but it just left me feeling like i was dressed sluttily and so when i got to victoria i changed and wore jeans under my dress. it's ridiculous. i'm annoyed with myself for doing it but i just felt so uncomfortable. but now i'm steaming mad :grump:

i don't even mean the wolf whistles cuz believe me i didnt get any..but blokes who make an obvious point of leering as you walk past. it really does make me feel sick. and no i don't take it as a compliment or think that i'm dressed in a sexy way because they will do it to anyone with tits in a skirt/dress.. heaven forbid a bit of leg!

dunno if it's any consolation, but I think this is true. Yea, I wouldn't take it as a "compliment" either. They are just dumb idiots who would say that to anyone and there is no connection how sexy/revealing/slutty/whatever you were wearing. I know it gets to you and I can perfectly understand that, but there are million morons of million different kinds out there and you are just driving yourself insane if you take every one of their words as granted, or if you look for a reason why they said it. Don't take it as a compliment, don't take it as an insult. Take it as something completely inane and try not to dwell on it.

I'm not dwelling on it. Just find it hard to believe that if a woman/girl whatever the age is wearing a skirt or a dress that somehow makes her compliant for the amount of harassment that goes on. And Matt you called me fat so I'm not talking to you anymore!

The point was that, for some people, if a woman/girl is a woman/girl that makes her "compliant" for this kind of thing. You could be dressed as a nun or a yeti and it could have been the same.

I just ignore comments or wolf whistles and smile to myself at how pathetic the people are! There's no point in getting angry about it and you should have stayed how you were, I bet you looked great.

Don't worry, I really hate it too. People say take it as a compliment but I fail to see how being shouted at like that is flattering at all. It's intimidating and maintains the attitude that if a woman reveals a bit of flesh then she must be asking for attention.
It might be a london thing, when I've been out in london (when I was 13/14 and with my mum!) I got so many stares and back glances I thought I had something on my top - which was see through but i had a vest underneath so could only see my arms and I was wearing black trousers. I've never had that much attention even now.

Ohh this didn't happen in London. Just my boring town in Kent where I live. That's weird I would have thought it would be less likely to happen in London

heh, I wanted to make the nun-analogy too. It's true. The fact that the only relation they have with women is them being in their computer as porn movies, is suffice to call you whatever, just because you are in lack of a penis.

@rach: I didn't call you fat :crazyeyes I hope you weren't serious! (hard to tell in this thread)

It does make you wonder who manages to breed these poor excuses really. I loathe it when blokes do the whole show-off routine. Complete lack of respect and manners. I'm quite brash and vulgar at times but i know where to draw a line between humour and abuse. I had a car of lads go past chanting one day, right infront of a load of OAPs and other people who knew me. I had jeans and a t-shirt on but they still chanted. I ended up telling them to f off and giving them the V sign. They turned round and came back to tell me there was no need for me to be so rude!! :chin: Go figure.
There is one lad in the pub who when drunk does the whole get your tits out thing and makes vulgar comments. He thinks it makes him one of the lads and funny which is a shame as he's a decent lad when sober. I usually tell him it's not his fault he's dim and insecure.
You usually find though that these people don't understand what they're doing wrong, although they would be fuming if someone did it to their wife/mother/sister etc.

    good point.

The ones who turn their heads to follow you with their eyes annoy me. They aren't even trying to hide the fact that they are staring. They make a big show of it. It's intimidating for a girl who is on her own especially.

I like the fact, that you state that there was no need to call you a slut, referring to your outfit.

Is there a time or a reason where there is a need to call a unfamiliar woman a slut, regardless of what she wears? me don't think so.
