  I would suspect it's to do with codecs? Do movies play okay in windows media player?
  
  These days I just use VLC media player, it has all the codecs built into it. It's a seperate program but makes it pretty easy to run films and stuff.
  
  Otherwise you can download and install the different codecs. Is it a movie file from a DVD, or is it a compressed file? Or what? xvid / divx / avi / mpeg / millions of other formats.
