Sub-letting

My housemate's decided to move out ASAP, even though there are five months left on our joint contract, so she wants to sub-let her room to someone else. She says it's her right to choose who replaces her and that I don't have the final say, despite this person being my new housemate. Is she right?

Thanks.

Morally speaking, she's clearly a cow.

Legally speaking, since it's a joint contract, I would imagine that her moving out is effectively renunciation of her part in the contract, so the contract's now just yours. You can then choose who you want to sub-let the room to.

Worst case, the joint contract will mean you both choose jointly the person who will replace her.

Having said that, it might be dependent on your contract with your landlord - is there any clause in it about sub-letting? I'd check just in case you have to have his permission.
