Asking To Be Taken Off Medication

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I have irritable bowel syndrome. (IBS) Since April, I've been put on 5 different types of medication. The first one, I was intolerant to one of the ingridients, the second, third and foutth did nothing for me and the fith gives me very bad wind. I didn't have anything for about 6-8 weeks and felt much better then than I ever have done in the last five months.

Can I just ask not to be put on anything more?

    Of course you can!

It's completely up to you what medication you take or don't take. If you want to keep trying different types to see if you can find one that works for you, then tell the doctor that and see what they suggest. Equally, if you're fed up with reactions/side effects/no effect then tell them that and ask if they can suggest anything else that might help.

Some people find certain foods make their IBS a lot worse, it might be worth looking into that.

Thanks. I did get advised to try going wheat free, that was 6 months ago. I got told a few weeks ago that I could try having a little bit of wheat now & again, which I think has made me slightly worse.

Of course you can, but it helps if you explain why so that the GP doesn't get too concerned. There are some medications where phased withdrawl is better.

I just stop taking things if they're not helping or causing problems.

In all honesty, I have tried loads of things for my IBS, and the only think that has consistently improved it has been improving my diet. Fresh veg, fresh meat, less processed shit. I have the odd niggle now and again, but 95% of the time, my guts are top class now. I'd recommend.

i'd ask to go see a dietian and possibly a endoscopy if it's really bothering you that much....i've been on so many excusion diets, and meds (senacot, mebeverine, buscopan, glucose stuff, and more...) and for me it's stress, which unfortunatly can only be delt with by extencive treatment (in my case, i'm just fucked up, you might not be)

I do keep forgetting to ask for this, but thanks for reminding me.

I've found this as well. I did get told by the stomach specialist that for some people, nothing works for them apart from avoiding certain foods.
