TV license

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Me and my boyfriend have a tv, but we don't actually use the aerial or watch or record any tv, except for DVDs. We wrote to the TV license people to say that and they said they'll still send somebody round just to check.

Now, I know that we're not watching the TV at all, it's not even on the channels, it's just perminantly on DVD setting. How can we prove to them that we're not watching the channels and just using the TV? Will they bring their van to visit?

Anybody else experienced similar?

Make sure there is no ariel plugged in, and no channels tuned in.

    Or..just don't let them in.

    :)

Yeah we have no aerial, I left it at my parents house as I didn't think I'd be needing it. I shall untune the channels tonight, I think they may still be on there :/

I have a dvd player tv combo thing, I can't untune the channels coz there are no buttons on the front to do it, and I don't have a remote. It was second hand, came with some fetching porn in the DVD drive too, woohoo, free 100 greatest cum shots for me. The tv people said they'd come 'round to me too, but they haven't. Funny how they assume you're a crim, rather than assume people are honest normal people how don't want their shite pumoed into their houses and brains.

    Haha lucky you! :P

If they actually put something half decent on TV then maybe I'd watch it. But I'm not tuning in for no celeb-this celeb-reality-that. I have better things to do with my time!

They may well come round to "check", but remember that they have no legal rights to enter your property without your permission. If they come round tell them to go away and get a warrant.

You are not breaking the law, and they would have to prove that you were.

The TV Tax bailiffs are filth to a man, and people should remember that when they go on about how great the BBC is.

They have no legal right to enter your house without a warrant. They can sit in their fancy little van all day if they like but don't bother letting them in, they can make people feel very uncomfortable. I'd advise inviting them to step in front of something with more than 16 wheels as an alternative to letting them in your house.

if they do and you 'aint watching any tv then you're in the clear arn't you.
they can only enter your property if you let them in. they can be crafty getting entry like asking if they can use your toilet... just don't let them in

My dad phoned the TV license place and told him he wasn't using a TV, so they came round and kicked up a fuss about an old one that he had in the loft, covered in dust, that he clearly wasn't using! Can't believe they even insisted on checking the loft! Grr.

It doesn't surprise me, it's all part of the "unique way in which the BBC is funded".

They're all cunts, and when I rule the world they'll be third against the wall to be shot (after politicians and bankers).

we had someone come round an d check ours in the old house. We had a tv but it wasnt plugged in or near an aerial. he checked that and said it was ok.
    Didnt seem bothered tbh.
I get loads of letters from the TV people here, but i never reply. Why should I waste my time. Theyre welcome to come round and check. I dont use a telly, and i dont have to prove that i dont. I just dont. I think its up to them to prove that you do ad tbh, most of them arent going to to a stakeout to try anbd catch you out.

    What about traffic wardens?

I don't mind traffic wardens, because I don't park in disabled bays or on double yellows.

Phew, all sounds okay then. I was slightly worried that they'd make us buy a license anyway even though we have no aerial and don't actually watch the channels... just cause we have the tv there. Like I said, if they actually put anything decent on the TV, I'd buy a license and watch it! And if I'm that desperate, I'll go over my parents to watch tv channels. DVDs are way better :D

I don't watch TV at all. When I brought my own house last year, one of the first things I did was contact TV Licensing and explained my circumstances. The advisor on the phone said that they would still need to check my premises but they never did it in the end. That conversation was dated 9 months ago.

I do play DVD's on my computer but I don't have a TV card installed.

I know this is a really old thread but I thought I'd help anyway. I used to work at the TV Licensing Call Centre *hides under a table*

Anyways, if you aren't watching TV at all really you're supposed to get your TV modified by an TV engineer just to "make sure" you can't receive a signal.

But basically, just completely take the aerial out of the back of your TV. If someone does come round and you let them in just to show them, they'll give you like a statement of your conversation to sign, just make sure to read it before you sign and stuff.

But everyone's right, Enquiry Officers don't have any right to enter your home, so you can flat out refuse to even speak to them. :)
