Abscinthe (sp?), has it worked for anyone?

Spent this past Friday with a buddy who just came back from a few months in his native England with a couple bottles of abscinthe, which is illegal in the US. So he, I, and one other friend finish the two bottles (ughh, tastes like shit), smoke a joint, and wait for it to kick in....
keep waiting.....and waiting....and waiting.
Bottom line is that nothing happened except that we got really drunk. One buddy ends up puking because the stuff doesn't really sit well in your stomach, me and my other friend stagger around Hollywood convinced that when it does work all of the neon and lights will be cool to look at. Ha ha, yeah right. Wasted a perfectly good night that could have been spent at a party or out on the town.
So what is the appeal of abscinthe? It certainly can't be the taste. Has this ever worked for anyone? Does anyone have a good story about the stuff?

I've had working experiences with it, few hallucinations and getting lost in Portsmouth for 4 hours....

Wormwood
The herb with a spicy, bitter taste that gives absinthe its unique kick. Contains thujones, chemicals that act on the same brain receptors as cannabis.
Highs: Narcotic-like effects, vivid dreams.
Lows: Wormwood contains a toxin that taken in high quantities can bring on tremors, convulsions, sleeplessness, miscarriage, paralysis, stomach problems, and brain damage.
The law: Absinthe was never formally banned in the UK, but was outlawed in many other countries.
Dunno, but my local Tesco sells it. (um, should I be telling you this?)

The type I drink at my local is really good stuff, made my mate throw up after only one shot! Hahaha, what a light-weight!
... that'll be because its filtered through woodworm, there are some cheap knock offs about but most of the absinth you buy is the real maccoy or close enough...

Bit like that really. Bad taste.
Like Tequila, more of a 'fed up drinking beer/alcopops-lets have something to spice it up' kinda drink.
Can make you aggressive and lose it. First time, I fell in a ditch, didn't make it home, and split up with ex! (or maybe it was a good thing)
More of a novelty really.

I work in a bar and a guy managed to drink 13 shots of this stuff even though the legal limit was 3 he was having his friends buy it for him. He was crawling around the floor like a mad man (Was pretty damn funny though <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0" ALT="icon"> ) N
The reason a lot of people think this stuff tastes like shit anyway (It tastes like Pernod <IMG SRC="mad.gif" border="0" ALT="icon"> ) Is because it is not drunk right.
It has to have a teaspoonful of sugar on it a taste of water and set on fire for 10 seconds then it tastes a bit lighter and wont fuck up your perception on life. <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">
i absolutely love the stuff and it IS legal in the states now...
seems some french company swapped the species of wormwood, and it can suddenly cross the borders (what a magic faery it is!) anyway, it's because southen wormwood contains less thujone (the ketone that USED to be believed to cause the hallucinations) than the grand wormwood... which is beside the point...
anyway, if you pour it through the sugar cube and then light it (the cube, not the drink) it'll burn out on its own...
pour your ice water over the sugar 'till the drink is cloudy... about as cloudy as it'll get... then drop what sugar remains and stir.
they say the wormwood gives it its flavor, but it seems to me the topnotes are anise and fennel (flannel? no. fennel.)
i don't even taste the wormwood 'till i'm lightly toasted and even then i'm not sure i REALLY taste it... maybe just a waking dream... but nice, nonetheless.

Its not that great to be honest so over hyped ... saying that I had three cans of strongbow and then did two shots of the stuff and i was ABSOLUTELY FUCKED felt like i was on drugs (well id done a few lines but i felt like i was on pills which is either my imagination or i was just really fucked)
so anyway left it at my mates house and the twat drank it all !

The stuff sold in England under the name of Absinthe is legal, obviously but it's not soaked in wormwood as the real stuff is as wormwood is the stuff that makes you hallucinate.
I've drunk the real deal a few times, and have to say that you get well pissed before any noticable effect from the wormwood. Load of jank. Wormwood is also one of the herbs used in vermouth found in Martini by the way.
You can buy the wormood on it's own but it doesn't intrest me in the slightest. Thujone just doesn't seem worthwile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thujone
As a drink I cant stand it.
its a lovely drink if you like your liquour strong and arent out to give yourself liver damage.
