They aren't bad at all, though. Anything they do down there is usually quick, painless and quick. It all sounds horrible, but in all my experiences, its been less painless than regular doctors visits!
Was your scan clear then? Was it an ultrasound you had?
If you have any questions you want to remember to ask the gynaecologist, write them down so you don't forget them... and write down the answers as you're told them if you think it'll help... I always end up forgetting what they've told me after I've been to see a doctor.
In England women are only sent to a Gynaecologist if they're having a medical investigation... annual smears and stuff are done my the GP.
Your GP is a General Practitioner. That means they have a reasonable knowledge of the common conditions and know what to look for for other things, and who to refer to for further investigation.
If you've seen your GP about it and that hasn't come to any obvious diagnosis, then they will send you for tests, like that scan. If that doesn't help them resolve things then they will refer you to a suitable specialist who has much greater knowledge in that area.
Gynaecologists are specialists in womens reproductive systems (as has been said), so as your GP can't work out the answer, he's sending you to someone who hopefully can. To begin with they'll probably ask lots of questions and redo some of what the doctor did so they have it first hand. It's nothing to worry about, they are just a doctor who decided to specialise rather than stay in general practise.
Like others have said they will probably want to examine you, either internally, externally or both, but they are usually very good at putting you at ease as they do it all day every day.
Hope that has helped explain things.
just remember to relax, thats really important!
Ok, so I guess they do things differently where you're from, but I'm from Ohio, and they have those here. You basically have your legs in stirrups and they do a little inspection just to make sure everything is ok. Just relax, like everyone has been telling you. And try not to think about it; it makes it much easier.
more like nurse territory AFAIK.
