It's been a while since GCSE maths...
If I have a figure of 319, and I want to compare that to 249: by saying it has gone up 20% or however much, how do I work out how much more percent it is?
Sorry if that makes no sense, I hope someone can help

Difference between them is 319 - 249 = 70
work out what 1% of 249 is by / 100 so 249 / 100 = 2.49
therefore 1% = 2.49
divide the difference between them by the value of 1% so 70 / 2.49 = 28.1124
Therefore if you had 249 eggs one day, and 319 eggs the next day you had increased the amount of eggs by 28.11%
319 / 249 is the difference right?
This equates to a ratio of 1.2811 ish.
Multiply by 100 to get a percentage (128.11%). Therefore the new price 319 is 128% of 249, or you can simply say has increased by 28%.
We had to do this all the time at school to get our marks into a percentage.
But how do you get to looking at 319/249 and thinking "oh...that's roughly a ratio of 1.2811???"
He ment roughly as in rounded off...
319 divided by 249 is 128.11244979919678714859437751004
Same....I'm officially a dunce....
But why would we need to know how to work out percentages when we can just come on thesite and have someone do it for us
10% + 5% + 2.5% right? Lets just hope they don't change the VAT rate!
Yeah, i'd do it 10%+5%+2.5%... but actually i'd use a calculator. I'm an accountant, we're issued them as you walk into the office
My mental arithmatic is poor, my boyfriend's is much better. It's a bit of an ongoing joke really.
There goes the "I know you may think you'll never use any of the stuff learned here, or will never need to do these kinds of calculations in your head, but you will if you get an arithmatic based job like an accountant!" argument the maths teachers always used to spit out at us.
Stick it into your calculator: 319 divided by 249 which gives me 1.28112449... (add a lot more decimals here). Next is to round it to a sensible number of decimal points. Personally, I would round it to 1.28 or 128 or +28% but it depends on how accurate you need the result to be.
Yup. It's all bollocks really, i have two calculators on my desk, one on my computer and one on my phone
