    What statement?

Its not suprising that Bush has rung Sarkozy, he'd have done the same with Royal as well. It's called diplomacy...

I think all it prooves is that Bush isn't as anti-French as some make out. If he'd really hated the French he'd have been praying for Royal to come in and bugger up the country...

Pretty irrelevant. A right winger salutes another right winger for winning an election. Whoop de doo. :D

It's pretty standard for countries leaders to congratulate newly elected leaders. I'd very much doubt that they'd actually officially come out in favour of one candidate over another in public though. They just do the usual, "we'll be happy to work with whoever the French people choose."

Far more worrying is the fact that Sakozy used practically his very first words in his acceptance speech to state that from now on the US can count on France as its newest servile dog (sorry, "friend and ally").

Shows where the little neocon scumbag's priorities and worries lie.

I feel for the French :(

You're right - he should have immediately declared war on the US and launched his nukes at Washington

Well someone needs to tell the right-wing U.S. government where to go...

ok not declare a war but for god's sake America is corrupt

the people are fine, but the government is just evil IMO

And France isn't it? Their record on Africa is tainted with corruption.

Do you think that using his acceptance speech to declare his love and affection for the US was good statesmanship? Perhaps for a fifth-world banana republic in desperate need of help, but for France?

Never mind the French people and all the problems and challenges France faces... Far more important to let the neocons know at the first possible opportunity 'one of them' has gained office and they can add another country to the list of US satellites (sorry, allies).

I actually wanted Ségolène Royal to win, simply because she is easy on the eye ;) And i really don't care about French Politics.

However I do think for France to reform and to kick start its economy they need a 'Thatcher' and I hope they have found that in Nicolas Sarkozy. I hope he has the balls to destroy the unions in France, which keep holding the country ransom.

I just wish Sarkozy would relax his attitude to immigration, as at the moment its too Daily Mail for my liking :thumb:

    Really?

from the BBC story as posted at the top.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6631083.stm
Nicolas Sarkozy opposed the Iraq war as much as President Chirac's handling of the diplomacy. He wants America to announce a phased withdrawal. He also opposes Turkish membership of the EU, which Washington favours.

Hardly seems like a steadfast neocon...

But yes being on good terms with the most powerful state in the world is probably better diplomacy than screaming abuse from the sidelines... If nothing else you have more leverage on US foreign policy than those who are opposed to it.

The fact that Washington DC is 'relieved' at Sarkozy winning tells you all you need to know doesn't it?

And more to the point (the point I was making), the fact that Sarkozy saw fit to state how friendly he'll be to the US in his acceptance speech (a highly innapropriate time and place whichever way you look at it) also tells you all you need to know about him. Even if he has, so controversially, criticised the US debacle in Iraq and wants it to look after the environment better. As if he's not going to have enough time and opportunities to establish a relationship with the US...

That Royal wanted to take France backwards...

    In which way, exactly?

Seeing that the US doesn't usually give such frank opinions on election results on Western democracies (not when it involves mainstream parties anyway) one has to wonder the reason for this 'relief'...

Whereas you seem to prefer that he states his emnity.
Actually no, I've never said that. I'm simply said it is quite worrying and unbecoming for a new head of state to express his great friendship for another nation in his acceptance speech.
