Graphic Card Recommendations

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
All you buffs!!

This is the card that has gone tits up in my PC. Now I'm waiting for an answer as to whether it's a FOC replacement or if they'll claim I broke it. Regardless it'll be 30 working days till I get an answer and that's a lifetime away!!

So any recommendations as a replacement. Something with the same specs and price range. Silent if possible. I know Asus do a silent 512Mb card.

:D

Go for an Nvidia item, 7900 series if you want tbh.

Prices for the 8600 a bit higher than I was looking at. £150+
Plus the 8600 is only 256Mb card. My x1600 is 512mb. Does that matter/make a difference?

The higher the MB the greater the amount of textures can be stored (think, higher resolutions require more ram). My card is 256mb at 1680 x 1050 ok. But for the massive monitors like 1960 x whatever yea you probably do need a 512mb card.

Same card as mine I think: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=544663

(though mine was £150 when I bought it)

ATI cards have much better drivers atm, something to bear in mind. Nvidia cards reporting issues with Vista and a lot of new games. Though that's only going to temporary, but they've just spent all their time developing the new cards to get ahead of ATI.

    x1650 512mb:

    Oh silent...

    512mb http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=470936 ?

eta: this one is mine http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=481911

Has to be silent as PC sits in the bedroom and on 24/7 sucking the life out of the internet. :)

Plus when I'm playing games / programming at night the missus needs her shuteye.

Although me shouting "For fecks sake" as I get gutted by a horde of Orcs tends to disrupt that.

    Cheers

Maybe, this (http://www.smartratings.com/search/7600/item/Search) will help you pick the best one based on your requirements. There is a compilation of expert and user reviews for every product that is listed. Good luck.

Ok. So my GeForce 7600 GS arrived and all plugged in. Drivers installed and all would appear to be working fine. Almost.

Whenever I play an AVI (Divx) it's very dark. See Screenshot. The rest of the screen seems to be ok. Just the actual window playing the file.

    Any clues/help?

I have installed the latest video driver but no change.

I have uninstalled DivX and reinstalled with no joy.

    :)

Was looking at the 7600 and think this is the one I'll plump for.

7600gt is a nice card, I've got one, it's not too noisy, and it runs most things at the moment.

cant run supreme commander, but I think that's my processors fault! (the only thing i've not upgraded in 4 yrs)

edit: ooh, I see you got one, ignore me! :)
