PETS! Small, easy to keep ones.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I really want a pet. I've always had a cat at home but now I live in a flat so can't really have a cat or a dog.

Just been to the pet shop to have a look, there were some really cute fluffy bunnies but they are not really suitable either.

Was thinking maybe some sort of fish or reptile? Anyone got any suggestions? I do go away at weekends sometimes so it can't be something that needs me to be there all the time.

I wanted to get a hamster or guinea pig type of thing but I decided it wouldn't be fair on the poor wee thing as I'm not here all of the time

Take it with you, keep it in your pocket or in your bag :D

Hmmm. Well, although you can keep cats indoors, i don't really think it's fair unless you're there quite a lot to give them plenty of attention, or there are two of them... and that's a bit much for a flat to take!

It depends how squeamish you are about what type of pet you get. Rats are great pets, very intelligent, much less vicious than a lot of other rodents and they don't smell like mice do. I think gerbils are pretty boring, hamsters are quite cool but make a lot of noise at night which is when they're mostly awake and you're trying to sleep!

Rabbits and guinea pigs are quite good - friendly and don't take up too much space, and can be house-trained. Quite high start up costs though, a decent sized indoor cage will set you back about £70.

Otherwise you could go a little more alternative? Chinchillas and degus are fantastic, fluffy and fun :) Again, expensive start up costs.

If i were you, i'd get a rabbit or ferret. But i can't have one any more, my kittens would either eat it or be scared of it :(

Ferrets and cats often get on pretty well!

They are VERY high maintenance though, and need at least 2 hours of dedicated playing time every day, as well as loads of attention. Very cute and very entertaining pets though, although they are a bit whiffy at times!

Although on the flip side, they sleep 20+ hours a day, so perfect for people who are out at work for a lot of the day, as long as they get enough attention at night

I heard that male ferrets weren't so whiffy if you got them neutered? Actually, they sound a lot like my cats - sleep most of the time, need plenty of attention and ever so entertaining! There are loads of people up here with them because i live near the countryside, our local paper's full of farmers with ferrets to get rid of.

Hmm. I might try and persuade my boyfriend that it'd be a good idea to get me one for our anniversary :chin:

Neutered ferrets aren't full on stinky, but both sexes do have a slight smell. It's not really unpleasant (reminded me a wee bit of treacle) but it is always there. But then again, all animals do. As long as you keep them clean and healthy it's nothing terrible.

I think it's going to be a fish or two. I've seen a tank for £2 in Wilkos and then I guess I need other start up stuff.

Yay fish! But they might get upset as I cook a lot of fish.

I have chinchillas, they are gorgeous, and if you have a hopper for food/water you can go away for a few days without worrying
