Looks like it's something only in the States:

In the USA, there is three degrees of murder. I'm not sure if this is right but I *think* they are...

First degree murder - when they intentionally kill someone and are aware that their actions will almost certainly cause death. It is premeditated.

Second degree murder - when they cause death whilst committing or attempting to commit another crime.

Third degree murder - when unintentionally, through their own reckless, dangerous behaviour kill someone. It is unpremeditated.

Well not all states have inacted that murder be divided into the multiple degrees. But in the most general sense, it is usually described as "all other kinds of murder" Just like Stacey has said 1st being intentionally, 2nd being killing somebody while commiting another crime. Often the term is used interchangably with manslaughter (as second degree can be referred to as voluntary manslaughter) In some states where there is a technical difference, 3rd degree may be pursued to get a harder sentence for the defendent. Most importantly, it all depends on the individual state.
