even though i seem to have lost weight recently through stress and depression and lack of eating and stuff... my hips are decidedly flabby and podgy and nasty. theyre really wobbly, i dont mind the shape of me generally. but at certain times, when i sit with my legs scrunched close to my body, the fat feels all taut and nasty and it looks foul. so thats somethign i wont be doing without some form of covering on them!! its kind of combined hips and thighs.
how do i get rid of some of this fat and tone them up? bearing in mind i dont do any exercise at the moment apart from walking to work and walking around AT work then walking back (400 yards round trip there and back lol) and im incredibly unfit and if i do that walk fast i get out of breath.

i don't know what to say other than perhaps joining a gym and taking a few classes. i'm betting some time on a rowing machine might be good for toning the hips and legs and upper body.
walking is always good exercise too, i just don't know how much it will tone.
the best advice is probably not to be an internet recluse like amadee.
just get out and about and you should be fine.
somehow i think maybe not.

how can you even consider posting that?!
There's a girl in my mirror
I wonder who she is
Sometimes I think I know her
Sometimes I really wish I did
Trouble with gyms is they are so damn boring, unless you have a good trainer or you are motivated big time then I would suggest that you combine the following:
swimming, cycling, walking, jogging etc. and if you like sport such as badminton or squash etc then this is a much more interesting form of exercise than incredibly dull gyms where you invariably get men who wear massive belts and think they are proffesional weight lifters or something! some gyms will do girl only sessions which you may find a little less intimidating.
If you do decide to join a gym then i would strongly suggest that you take advantage of any personal training they may offer because this makes motivation so much easier.
i find that surfing and windsurfing is all the exercise i need, and as you come from cornwall you should be on the water every day you lucky girl.
oh and by the way, you cannot 'spot train'. That is you cannot reduce fat from a specific area such as the botty by working just that muscle group. It is genetic in the way that the body decides to deposit and remove fat.

You obviously have no idea
Aim for exercises built on reducing hip/thigh fat working on a increasing circuit regeme...
I wouldn't say theres any fast way of doing it, you could also involve your exercise into your evening weekend night (plenty of dancing at clubs)
Good luck anyway
Oi! No promoting crash diets on this board!
lol dont worry, id never survive on that, i like my food too much! i eat more in the evening than in the morning/lunch, which i know i shouldnt..
y'know it all sounds a bit much like hard work.

my weight's been going up and down recently which is weird. not so long ago i lost about 15 lbs out of the blue, i couldn't think of any reason why (not stress and i wasn't eating differently and i wasn't exercizing more)... but now i've put it on again so i feel fat even though my weight is normal for me.
Actually, I think it might have been riding my bike, I'd been riding it a lot for about a month and a half, and I guess the weight loss kicked in after that time...? that's the only thing I can think of. Then my bike was being repaired so I got out of the habit of riding it, plus it's been really hot and humid here recently so I haven't wanted to be outside. I bet that's why I put on the weight again.
Hmn. I feel like I need to get motivated and get in shape and feel better about myself physically and mentally, then I'll be so much more happy with myself when I go to college. It just involved getting off my recluse butt.
Calvin's right, GFM, don't be like me
too late! im already a recluse!!!

What would you do if your son was at home,
Cryin all alone on the bedroom floor,
Cos he's hungry,
And the only way to feed him was to sleep with a man,
For a little bit of money?
and that strikes u as healthy?
just out of interest, which planet do u come from?
Look into these tired eyes. See something you might recognise.

I spent over 5 years as a qualified personal trainer so I know only to well the problems that both men and women face. The hardest thing is changing your lifestyle. Once you have and you keep it varied i.e lots of nice healthy food (no sugar, low fat etc) and a varied interesting exercise program then you will never look back!
As mentioned before you CANNOT spot train. That means if you have a lot of fat around say the tummy, and you work the abdominal muscles hard you will not see the benefit (extra tone) until you burn the fat around that area for the new 'toned' muscles to show through. get it. That doesnt mean dont work the areas where you are prone to a bit of pork. Just make sure you know that all those strenuous situps will not make you look 'ripped and toned' until you burn the fat by cycling swimming running etc.
Just remember that the heart is a muscle (the most important) and is responsible for getting oxygen and nutrients to all your other muscles, tissue and organs etc. So work the heart first and then all the other good things will follow.
Karla, I respect what your saying about certain crash diets but the cereal diet has been proven medically safe and exceptionally effective.
Wheat, corn, rice, oats and barley are the major grains used in breakfast cereals. Nutrition experts agree that whole grains offer nutrients, trace minerals and fiber that help protect against cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Cereal grains are natural sources of vitamin B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid and zinc. Grains also provide good sources of iron, magnesium and copper. The oils of the embryos of cereal grains are rich in vitamin E. Cereal lipids are relatively rich in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid.
Fibre is also important in any diet and cereals are a quick way to get fiber. Research shows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it supplys a large percentage of the bodies requirements each day for Iron, Fibre, Vitimins, Minerals and Carbohydrates.
If a cereal diet is followed using a high grain product for breakfast and tea with a proper cooked lunch being eatten between, the body can fuction correctly and gets the required amount to maintain an active healthy lifestyle.
And just to end, my father works as an Operating Theatre Technician at Blackpool Victoria Hospital with over 35 years experience is currently undetaking a cereal diet after enquiring to consultants about a safe and effective way of dieting with little exercise (even tho I accept that exercise is important)
I understand your arguments perfectly well and am a properly qualified nutritionist (Masters degree), among other things. However, I am still convinced that meals being replaced by a single food is not a healthy way to lose weight.
I also think that dodgy things often hide under the title of "medically proven" to make themselves look healthy. Some of the most popular diet books in the 70s were written by doctors - and some of them were eventually proven to be very dangerous. Also, many consultants went through medical school with no nutrition training at all.
'Which' magazine produced a report a few weeks ago that stated convincingly that many of the current diet fads are either useless or extremely unhealthy. Makes for interesting reading.
Ok then, np...
The reason why I was posting it was as a point of view and opinion, I'll withdraw it without problem..

U need to do at least 30 mins of cardio at least 3 times a week to start to notice a change in the shape and tone of your thighs.
I strongly recommend going out for a run. If u cant be bothered with going out, try doing step ups on your stairs at home.
This is a bit boring tho. I would also strongly recommend Tae Bo in terms of exercise vid/dvd. This concentrates a lot on your legs and is totally cardio-vascular. Its good fun too.
I used to work in a gym when I was at uni and used to train 6 days a week. (I was superfit then).
When I got pregnant and suffered a glucose intolerance, I ended up 15 stone heavy!
I am now 9 and a half stone and I do not do crash diets. I just eat healthily and exercise a lot. If I can achieve this, u can achieve anything, believe me.
U just need determination, motivation and will power. If you need more support, like a good old moan when it gets u down, contact me any time.

One word - cycling! It's the best! keeps legs, hips and bum toned and strong. okay, so cellulite (we all get it) is basically unshiftable, but ignore it.
Cycling is superb, seriously. There's honestly not much effor involved and a twenty-minute ride with a couple of gentle slopes every other day or so does wonders, for self-esteem and fitness. If there's lovely country roads around where you live that's a bonus - it's much better than being in a car, the "TV screen" effect is gone and it's just gorgeous. You can do it with a friend or by yourself. You can do it on a crappy old bike (like mine ) or invest in a really up-to-the-minute one. It's also a cheap way of getting around (provided you take a deodorant!).
so that's my two-penn'orth
