filling in cracks above windowsill

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
There's a huge crack along the top of my windowsill and it's letting in a huge draft. My brother also has the same in his room and we're getting condensation on the insides of our double glazing. I know of those gun things that fill in stuff but is there anything in perticular like a brand we should get?

What sort of crack? How big? Is there a gaping hole behind it?

Where exactly on the windowsill is the crack?

Get yourself a gun and a tube of decorator caulk if the cracks in a plastered area.
Or to get a nicer finish get yourself some pollyfiller, sand it back and paint it.

its along the top, it's the seal that's cracked open

Obvious joke, but more people prefer the bed.

How new are the windows? Was it perhaps caused by the fitting of new windows (which with FENSA) you should be able to do something about as your home had been damaged - although proving it may turn out to be a bit of a bitch.

How about some polyfiller in a gun, like Skive said.

The windows are about 7/8 years old now. They were done as part of a council scheme to upgrade the areas houses, we all got double glazing and a new roof if we paid so much of it. So i don't think we can really do much about it.

If it's plaster that's cracked then use pollyfiller or caulk. If it's wood then again caulk or silcone could be an idea. If it's uPVC and it's just a simple matter of using silcone.

But it's hard to know what what you mean and what exactly is cracked. Are they wood framed windows or uPVC?

And the crack is between the frame and the glass or the frame and the wall?
And what material is the crack in, or is it just that one material has shifted further away from the other?

What's the seal made of though?

i really couldn't say, it just looks like the kind of stuff you'd use in a bathroom

I'm guessing it's silicone/mastic - rubbery type stuff. You can get silcone for a gun aplicator though it's not easy to apply correctly.

We use it for vinyl borders at work.
