Betting - how much have i won

I wagered the other evening £5 on an event, at odds of 7/1

I won, so does that mean when I collect it tomorrow that I get 7x£5 = £35
or do I get (7x£5)+my origional £5 stake= £40

    You only need to understand odds if you want to figure out how much you have won.

    Being good at odds/maths has got not much to do with knowing what you have bet on, and if that outcome actually happens.

    I knew I'd won, and worked out how much, just wasn't sure if that included the initial dtake or Not.
