Funny noise

Can you help my friend please. This is what she said...

Anyone have any idea why my pc would everynow and then let out a shrill whistle?? (like a football refs)
It does it a few times mostly in the evening
I have nooooo idea?!?!?!?

It's not the modem as shes turnt the sound off.
Any ideas?

    Yea that's what I would have said, if her fans are plugged into the motherboard (or other heat sensor) then they may be controlled by the temperature in the case. When the temp gets high they turn on automatically.

    I can't imagine why it would sound like a shrill whistle though :|

    Not many other things would make a whistling sound other than fans.

    High pitched whistle can be a CRT monitor on it's way out(or just warming up, depending on it's age), or leaky capacitors on the motherboard.

    Isolate where the sound is coming from and take it from there. To check the motherboard caps, remove the side of the case and inspect them - there will be 6 or so within 3cm of the CPU socket. If they're bulging on top, then they are failing and need replacing.
