Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
in the last two months i've been drinking alot more than i usually do. This is because my Gradfther who i was very close with had just died and my girlfriend of 2yrs had split up with me. I've been drinking everynight for the last two weeks and now im finding that i want a pint at college. I dont think i'm not sure if i have a problem or not. All my mates say i have. Anyone in a similar situation? Anyone help me out?

    Hiya

You have been using a drug to blot out unpleasant feelings, but only you know whether this is part of a long term pattern or a temporary one-off situation.

We have some material on TheSite that you may find interesting, and there are helplines too: http://www.thesite.org/info/drugs/alcohol/got_a_drink_problem.html http://www.thesite.org/info/drugs/alcohol/dealing_with_problems.html

You could call drinkline (bottom of page on second link) for a confidential chat.

Also, we have some stuff about dealing with grief and breakups, which is something you are coming to terms with at the moment: http://www.thesite.org/info/relationships/bereavement/bereavement.html http://www.thesite.org/magazine/sex_and_relationships/the_exfactor.html

    Best of luck

god join the club. My grandfather died in november and i split with my g/f of 11 months bout 2 months ago i drink pretty much every night sometimes i might just have a can but sometimes i drink whatever beer is in the house then go and drink what ever is in the drinks cabinet. I dont really think i have a problem though. I just like to relax and for me this is one of the best ways of doin this. Also i then find it easier to go to sleep so i dont lie thinkin about everything that has happened

    Here's the A's to the Q's:

1 - b4 it all happend i only drank at parties or once a week down the pub with the lads. Normally now every night i'll drink more than 6pints and WKD, Side Kicks too.

2 - If my m8s can be botherd to come out i'll drink with them, i always ask them to. But sometimes they cant be botherd so i go alone most of the time.

3 - I get fewer hangover now. Well, i'll have a wee headache in the morning but its gone after a couple of painkillers.

5 - im knowen well in college as the party maniac, any excuse to! But i do like being in a pub club, i like the taste too.

Any help to you? I could've gone out tonight but i don't have the money. But i do have some cans in the fridge.

You may have heard of the 'CAGE' alcohol questionnaire. Basically, if you can answer yes to two or more of the following questions, it is likely that you have an alcohol problem.

    1. Have you ever felt you should <STRONG>c</STRONG>ut down on your drinking?
    2. Have people <STRONG>a</STRONG>nnoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
    3. Have you ever felt bad or <STRONG>g</STRONG>uilty about your drinking?
    4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid
    of a hangover (<STRONG>e</STRONG>ye opener)?

I'm not suggesting that you are an alcoholic, or that you even have a problem with alcohol, but you might find this site useful: AlAnon

And don't forget Karla's links, and the helplines too.
