Inability to relax

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I'm not sure if this is a health issue, but it would get lost if I posted in 'anything goes'!

I've realised recently that I have a lot of trouble relaxing. It's the end of the school holidays, and I don't feel rested at all. When I rarely get free time, my parents say just lie on my bed, listen to music, and chill out, but I can never relax.

It's the same when going out - everyone else around me is having a good time and relaxing, but I can't unwind. What should I do???

You need to find out what works for you when it comes to relaxing. I personally find that after a Volleyball match or training session or similair activity, although working hard during, I find at the end I feel very relaxed, having let of all the steam and energy. Or if I feel like needing to relax right away, something like a swim or GENTLE workout session down the gym helps.

Yes I know that to me the answer to everything is sports - but I do know a lot of people who this works for too.... As I said, you need to find what works for you.

How about some calming music? you know whales and that sort of thing. It may work but don't be surprised if u fall asleep during it.

Or try to have a night out or in with good friends. They know you the best and will probably get u relaxed.

I always listen to chillout music after a training session or clubbing. Can't at the mo, cos I lugged my amp and my speakers downstairs so we could listen to movies with decent sound, and I can't be arsed to carry up the speakers and reset them on their spikes

Try aromatherapy. Get some insense sticks or scented candles. Have a bath maybe with some essential oils (make sure you follow the instructions!)

Also, if you can't relax during the holidays it might be cos you're just following the same old routine, watching TV, listening to music, lying on your bed! I used to be like that and it makes you more tired, believe it or not!
If you don't fancy exercise, then just go for a walk, round the block or something.
Also, take up a hobby, mine was aromatherapy (can't you tell!) and it helps me to relax no end. It could be a sport, or something weird like researching your family tree.

    Hope this helps!

Any ideas about how to relax when I'm actually out at a party or bar or something like that?

Well I sometimes just lye back shut my eyes and pretend I am on a island in the bahamas or something for 5 minutes. I do this a lot in our sixth form common room and it gets pretty damn noisy in there...

I have the same problem, although I'm slightly better now. My only advice is: go out with someone who likes relaxin A LOT!

I turned into an absolute workaholic to the max, and got really bad since I went anorexic; I wanted to slog my guts out to get top grades and burn loads of energy, but I almost killed myself. I've just started uni & I almost didn't make it til Xmas: I flipt out and nearly had a nervous breakdown!

I'm starting to remember that there is more important stuff in life than work & study. Until you accept that, and you can relax/ chill without feeling guilty, then all the whale noises and lavender candles won't do shit! I still feel mega lazy if I'm not doing something productive, or if I have more than 5hrs sleep a night, but try to sort it out or you'll be REALLY unhappy. My advice? Get OUT OF THE HOUSE! Tempting to stay in, I know; I'm the no.1 offender, but it's great to feel like you've been out. Get a girlf/boyf/great mates ASAP cos I'd be one half of a Cadbury's Fruit & Nut by now if it weren't for my bloke!
