Laptop Problem

JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
Well my sisters laptop seems to have developed a strange problem.

In random usage there is a 'Generic Services Win32' error which XP blames on service pack 2 (which is not installed!), this kills exporer and the internet which wont work till the PC is restarted. Virus scan and Spyware show clean.

Its bloody annoying and means random restarts.

Anyone got any clues?

Not "Generic Host Process for win32 Services" is it?

You should be able to restart explorer, but CTRL-ALT-DEL and going to task manager. Create a new task (I think) and run "explorer.exe".

The new explorer.exe automatically loads though! Tried rekilling it and reloading it but network connectivity is still dead.

Yeah, it affects that. Try running svchost.exe.

That's about all I can think of!

It might be worth upgrading to SP2, that may fix the problem.

Have you tried applying update mentioned in that kb article?

Another thing to try is to check the integrity of the system files
to do this you will probably need your XP cd

Click Start, Select Run, then Type:

    SFC /Scannow

this will hopefully replace/fix any of the windows files that may have problems.

Installation of SP2 seems to have rectified.
