Subtitles for Scots

Anyone else think that this is a very good idea and should be encouraged on a lot more programmes?

    I don't see why - some Glasweigen accents on tv are completely unintelligible.

    Wow, I thought us grown-ups didn't lower ourselves to that level.

    And it looks like that's going to be one massive packet of cookies if everyone who couldn't understand the accent was to have one - seeing as the BBC considered it enough of an issue to provide subtitles.

    Lets not single out Scottish accents here, there are a few in England and Wales which are pretty hard to understand aswell. I think it's good idea.

    Dunno, I'm from that exact area and I speak like that when I'm at home, and I'm not offended.

    If I said "Awa an bile yer heid!" or "Fit like iday, min?", then hardly anybody would understand me.

    I've apparently got a "hillbilly" accent though :no:

    They subtitle people all the time from various parts of the country/world. The argument that people who can't understand an accent are just ignorant is a rubbish one.

    If the BBC want the audience, then it should be accessible.

    They had to do it for Taggart in Amercia.
    We should be able to have a choice of subtitles for all programs.

    If individuals don't understand the accent can't they put it on teletext themselves?

    Putting subtitles on for EVERYONE is assuming that the audience are pretty closeted and yeah..would be pretty offensive to Scottish folk.

    On digital TV you can get subtitles on every programme. It'd be stupid to have them compulsory because a few people can't understand regional accents.

    Haven't watched it but if they talk really fast and use words like "ken" and "fae" and stuff like that, then I don't see why they shouldn't use it.

    Yup.

    I don't have a particularly strong accent but I do use a lot of slang words and if you're not paying complete attention it can seem like a blizzard of unintelligible noise.

    I think that mostly the scots are made into a minority when it comes to being subtitled. I remember once there was a call to subtitle Rab C Nesbit. I see no harm in it as long as it doesn't happen for every scottish programme and it would be nice to have it for other programmes (like welsh/geordie) just to be fair.

    Although i have a knack for understanding accents :D Except from that gruff irish :razz:
