Looking for some design ideas, do you know any simple websites that are still quite attractive, no flash or image heavy one's.

I find that electronic manufacturers tend to have nice websites, especially ones that make nice looking kit. They do tend to use a lot of images and animations, but if you're just looking at the basic background, they tend to be quite good. What's it for, so we've got a better idea of what you're looking for?

    have a gander at http://www.faceparty.com.

yes yes i know its a site for randy chavs, but its extremely well put together. very simple and clear inferface, apparently every part of the site is within 3 clicks. plus it copes very well with the masses of users... somethings like 3 1/2 million profiles, 10,000+ online at any one point.

its functionally designed very well, but was that what you were looking for?

Oh so you're thinking corporate-type ones.

Here are some ones I did whilst in South America

www.cafecultura.com - Cafe Cultura hotel with a guy called Vidmantus Dapkus
www.hipecuador.com - Hip Ecuador tourism portal with a guy called Vidmantas Dapkus
    www.egbcc.org - British/Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce
    http://www.la-andaluzaec.com/ - Hotel La Andaluza

Though I'm learning Flash at the mo, it is so overused on the net and often doesn't add shit to a site. Good images, layout and navigation are the keys to a good website. Personally I'd say navigation is the most important. Whilst making one, ask yourself two questions:

    1) Where am I?
    2) How do I go to another page?

    Aye, navigation is dead important.
