the general starting point for lager is probably fosters then try others and see what you like.
    my opinions:
fosters - crisp, refreshing taste - very gassy
Carling - same as above but slightly more sharp
hinekan(sp?) - quite a sharp taste but not as gassy
Stella - sharp taste, very refreshing once a taste for it has been aquired
budweiser - eww, dont touch with a barge pole
tiger beer - strange malted taste imo, its not bad though
corona - my favourite lager - dont forget to ask for a lime wedge in the bottle

ETA: and the difference between lager and beer is nothing, lager is a type of beer, but most people i know, whe refering to beer, mean traditional ales.

Lager is made from sugar, and tastes sweet and sugary.

White beers are made from wheat, and tend to have a creamy texture and taste sharper than lager, they often taste a bit lemony.

Bitter is, well, bitter, but in a good way.

It depends how sweet your tooth is.

Lager I'd drink Amstel, Stella or Warsteiner, white beer I'd drink nothing but Erdinger Weiss, and bitter, well, you need to choose your own.

    Fosters is piss.

Whatever you do, avoid Becks... (does this actually contain alcohol or not?)

I don't mind Becks, its not the worst lager I've had, not by a long way. A bit bland, but its not offensive.

It's German so should be better, but hey ho.

Got to love Warsteiner and Oranjeboom.
