USENET - why can't i connect to anything

i'm really new to all this i've read various FAQs, but it doesn't mention anything about firewalls and conenction problems which i'm having.

i've tried several newsgroups including

news.clara.net
alt.binaries.movies.divx
alt.binaries.mpeg.video.music
[url]news://news.btinternet.com/btinternet.chatter[/url]


none of them want to connect. what am i doing wrong?

    What ISP do you use? Have you actually set up your newsreader for your ISP's servers?

    news.clara.net is probably not carried by bt's server.

    The other two are binary groups, bt probably don't carry them.

    The last one is a really annoying group.
