what does it mean when the playstation boots up, gives you the Playstationtm screen but then asks for a format disc?

also what's the difference between NSCT and PAL?

NSCT is Region 1 (mainly US)
PAL is Region 2 (UK, Europe and a few other countries)

As to the format disc dont know sorry.

aha i see :) i'm now clear! my bro gave me the idea that it was something to do with the tv setup, but as it's actually to do with regions then it's fine!

NTSC, and PAL are the signals that the TVs take.

IF you plugged a video or dvd player from teh states into a TV from the UK, it will do one of couple of things. (from experance)

    1) do fock all, no signal will be sent.
    2) your get a picture but it will be in black and white.
    3) If its a new TV or Player there might be a switch so it will send the correct signal to the TV.

I'm guessing the the PS2 would do the same thing. Your bros right it is partly to do with the TV signal, but its a region thing too. Chinese PS2 would need games from that region, unless its been chipped.
