John Reid considers more information about sex offenders in their area

he would consider calls for parents to get more information about sex offenders in their area.

Minister Gerry Sutcliffe is being sent to the US to see how the system - dubbed Megan's law - works there.

In a statement, Mr Reid said his "starting point" was "that information should no longer remain the exclusive preserve of officialdom".

I think this is a good thing and would save potential victims by checking up on someone before you leave your kids with them. Not only that but you could search for offenders near local schools or before moving into an area.

An example of how it could work, this website is for Missouri SOR:

Doesn't help the children who are abused by someone known to them i.e family member or friend, as with the majority of child abuse that takes place.

The problem is that child abuse is not new it is just reported now. Having sex with your children or neighbours children was common place in old Rome and around the world and as time went on it just got swept under the rug. Only now reports and "name and shame" campaigns have kicked off, as in the last 40-50 years, maybe not even that.

Identifying the route causes will be difficult i think to "Rehabilitate" sex offenders. Protecting the children is where resources should be aimed first in my opinion.

You've hit a nail on its head that I must admit I didn't consider. Why are more people abusing children? Or is it simply that it's a more publicised problem than in the past? Either way, it's utterly disgusting and has to be dealt with.

I think such a law is unnecessary. Rather, those found guilty of abusing children should never be allowed the chance to do it again. They should be jailed until the day they die. Those who commit such evil do not deserve freedom.

Parents should be able to know who they are living next to, I wouldn't want to live next to a nonce even if I didn't have have kids.

How exactly are you going to stop people from becoming an abuser? Your not gonna know until it's to late or if they openly admit to being wrong.

    Same here

Exactly. It's impossible to tell who will be a child abuser and who won't.

What about other crimes? Do you want to know if your neighbour has a conviction for drink driving, or drug dealing...or if he hasn't held down a steady job....or if he downloads porn off the internet of an evening.....or doesn't particularly like tomatoes? Where does it stop and who decides how much privacy you get?

If you want to know where convicted paedophiles are then you are accepting that the prison and probation services have failed to rehabilate the offender. If so, why is it acceptable that they have been released at all?

Quite frankly, it isn't. Unusually, there seems to be a general consensus developing here. I would go further - child molesters, paedophiles and other such scumbags should be jailed and never released. No chance of parole, no early release, nothing. If they are prepared to carry out such heinous acts on children, they do not deserve their freedoms or their human rights. They deserve only to rot.

Probably the same reason they let off the 1023 foreign criminals who should have been deported. Because they aren't serious about dealing with crime.
