Car Fires

JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
My flatmates car set on fire this afternoon! We really aren't quite sure why but we think the sun reflected on the glass and set a newspaper on the back seat on fire. Scary stuff. We're trying to fix it ourselves, we've managed to get all the smoke damage off the windows and panels, but the seats are proving a pain. We're gonna do it all ourselves as the insurance will rape an 19 year old whos claimed.
Very lucky it was on one side of the back seat not the other. The other side has the petrol tank under it :|

Holy shit man. That's crazy. You wouldn't think the sun would be able to do that. Ah well, at least noones hurt and the whole car didn't go up.

Luckily we weren't in it at the time! It was parked in the hall's car park and we only found out when security ran in to our flat to tell us before taking the fire extinguishers and sprinting up to the car park was us in tow.

Just be really certain it was just due to a freak chance, check you've not got a nick or a crack in any window that the sun was reflecting through that could have caused it, and will cause it again - if you have you'll probably want that window replaced to avoid it again.

It is really hot but the light shouldn't be focused enough to cause a fire

As Jim says, i wouldn't think that would be caused normally. The amount of shit my mates leave in my car on the seats etc is unbelievable and i've never had any fires etc.

I'd just buy a new bench seat for the back myself. Could pick one up from a scrappy or such. Or are you planning to re-upholster them? Be completely and utterly certain that there is no damage to safety bits such as seat belts, if there is i would definately consider going to insurance or a specialist just so that you could get it done professionally. Especially if the car is planned to be sold on.

the exact same thing happened to my mate when he was at storthes in 2003.
We put it out and then a few hours later had to drive to work, got back down to where the enterance is on the road and the engine started smoking, through the dash boards, we all got out and the whole thing blew up.

The plan is to get a new rear one from a scrappy. My flatmates dad used to do upholstery so we may go down that route. We're gonna need a new seatbelt too, one of them melted and snapped in half so we'll take it to a specialist for that.

Jim - I'll go check the windows now but they looked OK when we're cleaning them yesterday.
