What do you guys think?

I would have thought a .XXX domain would be a good idea, and get all those adult sites to move across, then makes it easy for parents to filter out porn from being accessed if you know they all end in .XXX

Yes, it would have been good, I don't know why they don't want it, will for sure make it much easier to filter porn content... It's too bad it won't happend...

Theres too much ca$h in the continued use of the .com names.

Therefore, the ICANN people will have been heavily bribed (and a porn industry can provide some pretty unique bribes) so as to come up with the right solution.

Same as every other "governing" body, the only need catered for is the one with the most bribe cash in it for the individuals who run it.

Theres more money in a .xxx thing but not for the individuals on the board of ICANN that would go into a black pit of bueracracy, never to be seen again.

it would be a good idea though, people would know to expect from it, and peopel could block it more easily from regular inexperienced users like young kids

I can understand why some sites don't like it. It also means it would be necessary for there to be a criterion for deciding what makes a site "adult", i.e. how extreme it would have to be. Would sex shops be considered "adult"?

I have had trouble accessing thesite from certain locations due to it's "adult" content

But it does bother me how much porn I am exposed to by accident online. Has anyone done an image search on google for "Jordan" for example, expecting to get a map?

The problem is that there was no real reason for companies already established to switch - it's an entirely voluntary thing. Therefore it would be completely up to the companies whether they wanted to switch over or not. I strongly doubt whether most of them would.

The only was this would work if it wasn't offered to the porn site companies, rather imposed. With hefty fines for displaying pornographic material without an .xxx domain.

yeh so you might be able to have blocked the .xxx domain

but spending money creating something new and different, to give you that benefit is pretty pointless considering the amount of porn that wouldnt want to be on a .xxx domain

I wouldn't be to bothered if we never get a .xxx, there isn't much point. If it did happen after all, I would however be purchasing a few .xxx domains to resell, as the the amount of type-in traffic you'd get from something like sex.xxx would be very valuable to adult web masters, thus making it an instant high value domain which would equal $1000+ bids if you were to auction it off.

I still think it's a shame it won't happen and I get that it would be expensive to transfer all porn sites if they would have been forced too, but I find that the .xxx sound quite cool...

Many people worried that such a move would somehow "legitimise" Internet pornography. Didn't this happen several years ago?

Look at how much effort porn mongers put into bypassing spam filters. Why would they want to have a domain that is very easy to filter?

It's not as if it is actually difficult to find porn on the net is it? :D

Though yes, as usual bigotry triumphs.

the 'respectable' ones who do a federal list of people involved and a declaration of 'actors' ages with some weird US government code underneath, tend to work towards not letting younguns see porn, like with having to pay 1cent with a credit card through a legit money transfer to see if you're old enough for a credit card with your name etc

of course all this can be got around but it stops all the novices in their tracks :thumb:
