So- after Blair and Bush have had their fun, after the requisite amount of dead people are produced, after the use of terms such as "collateral damage" have spun their way through the media, and (most importantly) after the military have persuaded their respective governments that spending needs to go up, up, up - what then? Should the Northern Alliance lead Afghanistan through the same shit that the Taleban did? Should a puppet leader be put in power - maybe the exiled King? Should Afghanistan should be turned into an American colony?
Now I'm not 100% for the bombing, but neither am I 100% against them either - but people are being killed and a country (what was left of it) is being further destroyed. If there is not a solid plan that takes into account the needs of the Afghan people then I promise you that 5, 10 , 20 yrs down the line there will be even more terrorists that will come back and so the cycle will start again, and I don't believe that anyone in power has considered what to do after the bombs stop raining down.

Have they actually declared war - I think The US and UK are on their way to being charged with war crimes!
Im 100% behind the bombing. Its the only option left to us. There are very few, if any innocent Afghans being killed. Most targets have been military bases out in the middle of nowhere. Only a few missiles and bombs were in the cities and those were targeted on military sites. I dont believe the footage of the blown up house on the news yesterday for a second...1000lb bombs and missiles do not blow up a single house and leave the others around it completely intact. Propoganda at its best.
byny, Im not sure what the rules are but I suspect that we will get away with not declaring war because the Taleban arent a recognised government and we arent actually at war with the country but rather the group. Not sure if that makes sense.
Of course, in this day and age everyone and their mum is being charged with war crimes.

There is to much agreement here, what's gone wrong <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif">
Nobody has a plan that involves no loss of life. The taliban were informed of what would happen if they didn't hand Bin Laden over, and guess what, it's happening. I don't know why everyone is acting like they are surprised.
do I look like I'm surprised!?
We knew it would happen, doesn't mean we agree with it though.
Our (and the US') foreign policy has sucked in this area of the world and we need to rectify that. It really isn't any surprise that we have had little public support (from Muslim states) to the bombing even though many believe that the WTC attack was wrong.

Whoever they are?
What if we don't like them as much as we don't like the Taleban
Ive no doubt that the powers that be will put into power a govt that will do whatever they want. So long as whichever government replaces the taliban stops terrorising its people and stops letting them starve to death by the thousands then im happy with it.

The chances are that it will be a puppet regime, loyal to the UK and USA. Chances are when this war is over there will be permanent allied bases established in the region.
because there will be more for them to fight against.
How can we stop terrorism full stop?
Not sure I agree here. As long as the govt put in place has at least some legitimacy with the Afghan people I suspect they will be fine with it..Most normal Afghans just wanna get along in life, same as all countries. Once they see that their kids arent starving to death or getting killed in wars then im sure they will accept it.
I dont think thats possible. We are currently taking the best possible action to achieve that goal. Making sure that terrorists have no bases to train for and carry out attacks from along with taking away their finances is the best thing we can do.

Indirectly it is..They may not be standing on the borders with rifles threatening aid workers but their very presence as the ruling party means that they aint gonna get support from those that can give it best.
The food the Americans are dropping at the moment is just a publicity thing but im sure that once the Taliban are gone then both the US, UK and Europe are going to be more willing to help out the Afghan people than they would be if the Taliban were still there.
Same goes for Iraq..If Saddam and his regime was out of the picture then sanctions would be dropped and aid would pour in. I happen to think we should drop sanctions anyway but thats beside the point.

By making committing terrorists acts so expensive that it becomes a failed technique.
Sorry, but when death = honour = glory = eternal adoration = righteousness in the eyes of God, that just is not possible.
The war is not against people or things or states. It is a war against a certain state of mind - blind faith. Wiping the Taleban out is (or ought to be) only a means to an end i.e. the education of the Afghan people.
That same principle should be applied to any group or organisation (even government) that actively cripples the forebrains of human beings by saddling them with faith, especially religous faith.
You're damn right we need a rational code of morality and ethics. But not much progress can be made in that direction while we've still got a majority ranting about gods, devils, souls, and absolute morality, and using an ancient book written by ignorant nomads as a guide.
