Liverpool fans attack Juventus fans and it's all the fault of Roma fans?
It isn't only the English who get punished for bad behaviour - after the trouble at their World Cup qualifier with Switzerland, Turkey now have to play their next six international matches at neutral grounds behind closed doors.
The year before, in the Final, Liverpool played Roma. Not only were Liverpool fans attacked by the Roma section but also by the police.
It really is worth reading up on that subject because there was a very direct link between that final and the one the following year - Heysel.
This Link will take you to a perspective. The opening comments are partly what I am alluding too.
Except that when the English get banned their clubs sides are prevented from playing in Europe for five year. Not being closed gates - no matches at all.
Much, much harsher.
There's plenty of blame to go around, sure, but nobody should pretend that the Liverpool fans were blameless victims to a man, with no responsibility for the disaster at all.
Heysel was far more serious than what happened in Istanbul last year - 39 people died! And remember, the five-year ban was imposed by the English FA itself.
I wouldn't disagree with that, but put in context of Liverpool fans' previous exemplary record you have to look to see what changed, and why they have never had such a record since that day either.
Had it been Chelsea, West Ham or Millwall fans on that day no-one would have been surprised.
But it was one incident - even though the toll was very high. Until that date, if memory serves me right, there had been no death from fans violence. However, compare that with the number of individual incidents since in which english fans have been killed - Istanbul, Rome, Portugal - and yet there doesn't appear to have been any real punishment of the clubs/FAs involved.
The ban was more a Govt insistance rather than the FA and was enforced by UEFA. It was UEFA who decided to lift it too...
They were not.
But their actions were directly caused by what happened in Rome. They were, wrongly but perhaps understandably, out to get any Italian that got in the way.
Yes, but the reasons for that were not because of Liverpool and their fans.
If that happened in a modern stadium, nobody would have died. It didn't, it happened in a decrepid stadium that was not fit to host a Sunday League game, let alone a European Cup final.
On the subject of Heysel, the footballing authorities over there are totally to blame. Two supports - one which love to cut up opposing fans, the other the founders of modern football violence - in a shitty stadium without proper separation always had potential for disaster. Total negligence.
which is exactly what will to any random Turk in the unlikely event that Leeds ever get back into Europe. This isnt something that fades in the memory...
