first black prime minister/president

this stems from a class discussion from english at college ages ago.

at present there has never been a black ruler of america or Great britain. these countrys are thought of as white and generally are but i read that with incresing immigrants into this country and a high birth rate of black people in 50 years time white people could be the minority and so in america.

This brings up the black groups who campaign for a black ruler n if the black people are a majority it will have tremendous backing.

but, in 50 years time even if we dont like em there will probably still be racists who may attempt to assassinate a black president so IMO this will never happen.

and it brings up this group argument about the future of humanity and gets out of hand but what does everybody else think about it?

There is little chance of black people becoming the majority in a hundred years, let alone 50. Most immigrabts at the moment come from eastern european countries. As well as this you are forgetting the inter racial factor. As blacks and whites marry the predominance of the black gene dwindles, resulting in mixed race children. If they have a baby the skin will be lighter still and so on.
The ethnic population is also extremely small in comparison to white people, and makes up apporximately 4.8 million. This can be seen below:
Dimensions: Ethnic Group by Age Dataset1,2
All ages (=100%) (millions)
White 53.1
Black Caribbean 0.5
Black African 0.4
Other Black Groups 0.1
All Black Groups 0.9
Indian 0.9
Pakistani 0.6
Bangladeshi 0.2
All Pakistani/Bangladeshi3 1.0
Chinese 0.2
Total 57.9
This is the state of the population for 1999.

Hows about a black, openly homosexual president?

I'm not taking the piss but there are a lot of right wing fascist head-fucks out there who would really object to having a black or asian president.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if we had one in about 20 years time because the majority of this generation has grown up with a liberal education and people that are from ethnic minorities have more equality.

You can never achieve anything without taking risks!

well if u look under the anything goes board 4 the chain mail topic ull see that world overall whites are a minority. Ur right about the race mixing, but there is a good chance of whites becoming a minority. more of them are moving in than u realise.

kinda hard to imagine the whole thing tho.

Worldwide there are more asians than there are black people, unless this is also what your were implying?
However, before it gets to this I think we will have more controls in place to stem the flow of immigrants into the country.
Maybe in a few years time there will be a black prime minister, I dont care about a Black president because the race of an american president doesnt really matter to us. But I think a black prime minister is a real possibility. However there are very few black/asian members of parlimant or black/asian barristers. Because of this there is very little chance of a black/asian member of society reaching the post as there is likely to be someone who is more qualified who happens to be white, simply because there are more white people.

my my whowhere, u'v certainly been doing ur homework! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"> just kiddin babes!

Well i don't really think it matters whether a president or prime minister or whatever is white or black, homosexual or hetreosexual, as long as they do a decentjob at running the country!

But then, i realise that not everyone has the same views as me, i come from a very anti-racist area. Actually, i am soooo lucky to live here, there is totally no discrimination.

But then u go to another place, and u see the complete other side of the spectrum.

Although i do think racism is dying out a lot, it will never be gone.

If the sky that we look upon
should tumble and fall
or the mountains should crumble in the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry,
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand
Stand by me

One thing to consider is that the US and Canada have such completely different types of ethnic make-up from England. Basically, England is almost all white, whereas in North America, we are far more multicultural. I think that blacks are already 30% of the US population, and the United Nations calls Cannada "the most multicultural country" on earth. I imagine that because of this, the US would be likely to vote in a black president before England.

Another thing to consider...most people have being using population stats to predict the colour of a leader, but I think we should be careful about this. To say that blacks will vote for a black candidate assumes that blacks are interested in race more tham the quality of a candidate. Do you vote because the candidate is white, or do you think that their ideas, policies and skills are important? Fact is that ethnic groups having been voting all along even though they may not have the option of voting for a candidate of the same race. A good illustration of this is the fact the the US and Canada have never had a female leader either, yet women make up 51% of the population. Anyhow, I just wanted to throw this idea out beacause this whole deabte is based on an assumption about how people vote which isn't quite true.

Also a question for Whowhere (or anyone else who wants to respond): I get the impression from your comments about immigration that you want your country's ethnic make-up to stay the same, and I'm not sure why that is. Can you tell me why you would prefer your current stats to the more varied ethnicity of countries like the US or Canada? I can't see what difference it would make to your life, but I must be missing something.

Good, point. However the reason I used population statistics isnt to show that whites only vote for whites e.t.c.
There is very little chance of there being a black prime minister in the UK at the moment simply because, statistically there are fewer black people who are capable of the job. We have 659 MPs in this country, I have been told, but dont quoute me on this that less than 30 are black or asian. Only 100 or so are women. This means that we vote for white people because we do not hae any choice as there aren't enough black people who are qualified or have had the oppotunity to rise to the posistion.

I chose stats for the ethnicity of my country because I live here. I am more interested in the outcome of an election here than I am of an American or Canadian one. That is why I ahve chosen British statistics. Im sure there is more chance of America having a black President, but why dont they? Why doesnt Canada have a black president? Either because everyone is racist or because you feel the black candidates are not qualified? Statistically speaking there is more chance in both the above countries, more than there is here. Please explain.

I wish I had the answer to this one. I would think that it is a combination of factors, some of which you mentioned.

Racism is an issue still in all 3 countries, whether we like to admit it or not. And there is the issue of qualified candidates too.

The fact is that visible minorities tend to be poorer and have less access to higher education (maybe related to racism too?).

I think this is a really complex issue which involves many factors, and I don't have all the answers. I just wanted to make sure that we were thinking of those other factors as well as simple poulation stats.

Perhaps someone else here can think of other potential reasons?
