Berlusconi's advice to the poor: make more money

MILAN (Reuters) - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's recommendation for Italians trying to escape poverty: do it my way and earn more cash.

Asked in a television interview late on Monday what the government could do to help a worker earning only 1,500 euros ($1,793) a month, Italy's richest man said: "The answer of Berlusconi the businessman is, try to earn more."

What wise advise, Mr Berlusconi. How stupid of the poor to starve and suffer for generations, when all they needed to get out of poverty was simply to 'go out and make more money'.

Well it looks like the libertarians and free-marketeers of the world might have a new idol to worship.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

    Funny but sad.

This guy is a right tit though. Unsupprising. Give Bush a few days to endorse this statement I guess.

    Ignorance prevails.

Berlusconi can't be all bad, after all he's given Tony & Cherie a few free holidays, and he certainly knows how to make money - thats two commendable things in my book.

As for Mafia connections, well thats what they say about all successful Italian businessmen & politicians, envy knows no bounds. I think for an ex-Cruise line crooner the boys done good. Who knows he might even become a Papal knight.

He isnt just Mafia connected. He is implicated in bribery and financial misdoings, abuse of position and was a member of the now infamous P2, who interlocked with all sorts of international criminal activities. His name was on the membership roles.

Berlusconi might seem a bit on the shady side – although certainly no more than the likes of Chirac. Regardless Berlusconi was elected by the Italian people and as a major European power we have to work with him. And Britain’s not exactly going to win any popularity contests in Europe – so our friendship with Italy and the Italian PM should be valued.

So he was elected and our prime minister licks his arse - does that means we're supposed to respect him? He sounds like Bush on a moped to me.

It's good advice and pretty easy for any single person to do.

Ofc, keeping that money from the hands of this great twat and people like him is a bit more difficult.

Hell, most factory workers earn hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. The government just makes sure they never see it and it all goes to shareholders instead of them.

Look who else got elected by the Italian people!

I think there might be something shady going on with the voting system there, every Italian I've ever met hates Berlusconi's guts.

I'm really surprised you of all people would have any words of support for that ultra-corrupt, fascist-friendly, racist, arch-right wing piece of shit.

Er no he wasn’t. You could say Hitler was democratically elected but the same cannot be said of Mussolini. The fascists were a minority party when Mussolini came to power (the Socialists having significantly more representation) and Mussolini was completely reliant on support from the liberals. Leading a coalition in which the fascists were the minority Mussolini had the support of the liberals and industrialists because he was seen as an effective way of crushing the chances of a communist revolution – bear in mind the fascists had vastly exaggerated such dangers. (While the fascists did 'win' an election following the Acerbo Law you could not call any election under it democratic).

I’m not that familiar with his domestic policies, although I have not read anything that would make me see Berlusconi in the same terms as say Le Pen. However I’m generally pleased at the foreign policies that he’s adopted, he’s a strong ally to Britain and his outlook towards the US and Israel are admirable. Berlusconi is a bit dodgy – but Chirac is hardly reputable is he? With Merkel in Germany taking a more atlanticist stance moving towards Blair and Berlusconi – and with Eastern Europe too rejecting the Chirac point of view am I right in thinking you’re probably not too thrilled at the way things are going in Europe politically?

Then there’s Cameron too, a strong contender in the next election and despite moving towards the centre ground strengthening ties with the Republican party and putting Hague and Fox in senior cabinet positions – two eminent figures sympathetic towards Republican foreign policy outlook. :D

David Mills, David Mills, David Mills, David Mills, David Mills... :p

I'm right-wing, so by Aladdin's belief, I'd agree with what Berlusconi says, right? Er, well, not really. I think Berlusconi is an embarrassment, and that's pretty much where my view of him ends as well.

I figured out those might be your reasons.

Nobody too dodgy so long as they support Israel eh? ;)

My displeasure with Berlusconi has little to do with him being right of centre (he's far more than that anyway) or even being an ally of the neocons in America. He's a racist piece of shit, for starters who thinks the Arabs are "inferior". He has ordered his police to shoot illegal immigrants who are trying to make it ashore. He has made countless political alliances with the Italian fascists. He has created laws designed exclusively to give him judiciary immunity.

In fact, he's closest to Nazi ideology than any other mainstream politician (let alone Head of State) in the world.

By comparison Chirac and anyone else are beacons of honesty and decency.

Wouldn't you just like to be the person who intercepts a phone call between Tony and Silvio? I wonder what they talk about...

And the less said about this picture, the better...

His foreign policy is supportive of America, Britain and Israel – I generally agree with that. Since Berlusconi became PM relations between Britain and Italy have strengthened, I think that’s a good thing.

I wasn’t aware of Berlusconi being a racist, nor of his alliances with Italian fascists. When I have the time I’ll read up on that. But what do you want us to do? Impose sanctions on Italy? We don’t choose the Italian PM. If we’re going to have foreign relations with Italy, a key member of the EU we need to deal with its PM. It’s up to the Italian electorate to change things.

Sure. But I hope once you get yourself fully acquitted with the dealings and ways of Mr Berlusconi you will see him in a different light. ;)
