Astigmatism is a condition that may be present at birth. It may also be acquired if something is distorting the cornea. Vision can generally be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. The major risks of surgery (aside from the surgical risks) are over and under correction of the astigmatism. There is no cure for over correction. Under correction can be solved by repeating the operation.

Take it you have it too? What are those new contact lenes called that are designed for that?

I have an astigmatism in one eye, and I recently got a contact that corrects it. I've also got a similar lens in my glasses. They work great, can see fine with it now! Although my gf has one as well, she finds it a bit weird wearing them sometimes, like her perspective is all messed up. Just try it...I personally think they're fine and work great.

i've got it really mildly in both eyes (i have glasses that correct it, but i don't really need to wear them atm and it's more hassle than it's worth).

as far as i was aware, it was a glasses or contacts job. eye surgery scares me :nervous:

Yeah, I have an astigmatism in both eyes, both quite severe.

Toric contact lenses are best for people with an astigmatism. Gas Permeable lenses are also recommended. I tried GP lenses but was in agony, so I personally hate them, so for me, I'd choose Toric lenses. (well, if they weren't so expensive.)

You have a few options when it comes to astigmatisms, you can wear glasses, contacts or choose to have Lasek Eye Treatment. It's up to you!

How much do the toric ones cost? I have contacts but they are a lower precription to what it should be due to this problem. My contacts are -9.5 and my glasses are -12.

The torics I had specially made cost in the region of £200. This was a few years ago now, so you'd have to speak with a contact lense specialist for a more recent quote.

You can also get disposable toric lenses, which although cost a lot in the long term, are pretty affordable in the short term - Here's some examples.

Tbh, I would just go to the opticians and ask them there. Don't go to Optical Express but a different one and ask them your options. Also, there are so many different opticians about, if you decide on contacts then shop around.

^ I agree. For someone with a complex prescription you're better off going to a Contact Lense Specialist, rather than a chain opticians like Specsavers or Optical Express as they're more suited to the lesser complex prescriptions.

I've also found from going to various specialists, they tend to do you a better deal than chain opticians and can afford to give you the odd discount here and there.

Since the original question asked about treatments, then I'll say that I believe that laser surgery can correct astigmatism as well as the usual short/long sightedness.

I have astigmatism in my left eye. For as long as i can remember I've been tested and stuff and nothing's really worked. Then one of my recent opticians exams found out that my brain ignores my left eye (it kept turning) There's nothing they can do about it. I('ve had glasses, one contact in one eye etc. Nothing works.
