Insomnia

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I think i have it. Well sort of, i appear to be nocturnal, which isnt good as theres things i need to be doing during the day.

Ive tried getting into a routine of going to bed and getting up at regular times ensuring i get about 8-9 hours sleep but it doesnt work because no matter how exhausted i am, i just cant drop off.
Ive tried lavendar baths before bedtime, having no caffiene or sugary snacks in the evening, having warm milk and honey before bedtime, or horlicks. All that sort of stuff. I still cant sleep even if ive been having loads of exercise.

The strange thing is, i can easily fall asleep in lectures or in the evening while watching tv or something, but the moment i go to bed and my head hits the pillow, its more effort to keep my eyes closed than open.

Im always so tired during the day, because it takes me about 2 hours to fall asleep. Im sat here now at gone 2am and im completely wide awake. Yet i need to be up at 7

Any suggestions/ideas?

 my life is completley dependent upon refreshing morning showers and regular fixes of caffeine!

i cant even rely on a shower to wake me up :( our shower is like a dripping tap, so i have to have a bath instead which just makes me more sleepy!

Stupid daytime people, i would cope much better if my lectures were at night.

Our shower took an instant dislike to me and varies, mid shower, between molten hot and ice cold. Wakes me up a treat even if it does put me in a god awful mood.

Yeah I seem to be lumped with a lot of early morning lectures this semester!

Only things that get me to sleep early is alcohol, weed or sex. And then I wake up groggy, foggy or fucked. So the day's a bit of a write off anyway :p

i do find that getting drunk helps actually, but obviously its not going to be that good for my liver turning into an alcoholic. i got so pissed off the other day that i got drunk on my own in my room at 3am just so that i could go to sleep!!
i dont smoke and wouldnt start so unfortunatly weed is out of bounds for me, i wouldnt be up for taking it anyway, my housemate always has a spliff before bedtime, does well.
as for sex well that never made me sleepy anyway  quite the opposite.

think i might go to bed now to face my hours of laying awake. fun!!

I jave the opposite, I could fall asleep at the drop of a hat, only reason I'm up now is because of illness. Have you tried herbal remedies? The chinese are brilliant at healing and putting things right you know.

lol Placebo is better than nothing. But I would say actual medicine is more of a Placebo effect, Homeopathy and Chinese medicine is more about treating the cause and your whole body etc.
    Never say never.

    Have a look at these

    http://holisticonline.com/Remedies/Sleep/sleep_ins_homeopathy.htm

    http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsConditions/Insomniacc.html

    http://www.herb-doc.com/

Visit a Chinese Medic they have recently advised me very well with symptons I/doctors have not been able to control for years, I'm much more optimistic about my health now.

    i beat you!

only thing ive found that works properly is a good smoke .. not really ideal as i now need to smoke each night to even attempt to get asleep .. and its just as hard to get up the next morning ..

getting really drunk does the trick too but i generally wake up needing water throughout the night then wake up early the next morning (except when i have work of course :()

there's always sleeping tablets etc, but then you become dependent on those too .. my da has been takin them for years now and cant get asleep without them .. i dont think they're a good option for anyone who suffers sleeping problems all the time!

If you're going to waste your money on homeopathic sleeping tabletts- you might as well sniff a jar of coffe and send all your extra cash to me. tis rubbish.

Its not just the water which makes you wake up in the middle of the night, alcohol is difficult to digest, so the body is actually quite awake dealing with that. The alcohol acts as a sedative, but as that wears off then the stimulant effect of the breaking down of the alcohol kicks in, and bingo you're awake at 4am.

Anything you take on a regular basis which works will become a habit, so dont start taking something unless you are fine taking it every night for the next few years.

I managed to see a specialist about my insomnia, it was almost a total waste of time, he just shugged and said 'what do you want me to do?'.

They cant really prescribe anything on a long term basis and there isnt really any other options.

aye had this for years now, when i lie down and shut my eyes my brain just keeps spinning, tried a lot of things and some do work for a while until my body adapts and then i\'m buggered again, and the doctors are pretty useless when it comes to this kind of stuff......i find it\'s not so bad since i started working because there\'s a bit more routine to my life, at uni i would fuck around on the pc, watch family guy and smoke weed til 4/5 in the morning, fall into a coma then wake up at 2 the next day and start all over again........

anyways, apart from that i\'d say a good diet helps, not eating too late, and try meditation, though i can never be arsed to meditate so i just put up with the insomnia, it\'s not so bad these days usually only takes an hour or so to drop off.......

I'm awful at sleeping. I average 2-3 hours per night. Things are better at the moment - I've tried medicine(both natural and synthetic), but neither have really helped. Things vary from person to person, but the following suggestions help me - sometimes...

    1. Wiggle your toes with your eyes closed
    2. Buy some comfy headphones and some relaxing music
    3. Go to bed at 10pm and stay there until 6am. Only get up for a piddle and to change the CD :).

Or get in to bed with someone boring. John Major springs to mind... ;)

i went to bed at 3 and i was awake at 6. I had to get up at 7 but instead of having a bath and going into uni, i just moved my car then went back to bed again because i was exhausted. I slept in till 2 and now my day has dissapeared :(

thanks for the links vicky, im going to do a bit of research into herbal things though i am abit sceptical about them.

Skunk is the only thing that has ever worked for me. You could try some very low doses of melatonin.

Do you do much exercise? That does help quite a bit.

Theres really next to no decent evidence that this works, and I dont think its for sale in the UK anyway.

I have some 3mg capsules of it, they get you to sleep in no time. Unfortunatl 3mg is a massive dose (your body releases 3 micrograms at a time) and i always wake up after an hour and cant sleep all night. I've tried very small doses of it and sometimes its worked sometimes kept me up all night. If it works for you it can be a really good fix for insomnia.

3mg seems to be the norm when you buy it in the US, I think they give you what seems to be a huge dose because its not absorbed very well.

I've found they can be somewhat useful to help you sleep longer, but as for knocking you out, no definitely not.
