escorts, what to believe...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
today i was at my boyfriends house using his computer for uni work (he knew and i had permission to be on there)

anyway i pressed the wrong favourite in the list (i wasnt rooting i did just press the wrong one) and up popped a page for escorts in his local area. it was like loot for prostitutes where they put on their adverts and phone numbers.

I couldnt say anything when he came back because he was with his mum, so i rang him when i got home. he said that it was a porn link but i looked properly around the site when i got home and it wasnt it was just full of adverts so he said in that case he didnt know and either he must have thort it was a porn link and saved it or it was some kind of spyware.

in this situation would you believe your other 1/2?i want to believe him and he has never given me any reason to believe that he has been with anyone else but over xmas we did go through a rough patch and very nearly end up breaking up

i dont know what to think. How could a link for his local area just appear as spyware?

any opinions would be great cheers.

Seems a bit of a coincidence that his favourites would have a porn site on that just happened to have adverts for escorts on prostitutes in his local area. Where does he live? Because if it's London (or Amsterdam) it would be slightly more believable. I could believe it was spyware if it was just adverts for prostitutes in general, but also in his local area? Unless he's been on a porn site and given his address (unlikely). Some websites do come up with an option to save to your favourites when you leave them, so it could be a case of just not paying attention. But it still comes back to how likely it is that it woud just happen to be his local area. Seems a bit suspect to me.

I would give no weight to the "local area" claim.

A lot of these sites are now claiming to be related to your local area - which can be quite funny when your ISP is too lazy to update the details for the IP address of your ADSL connection, so the sites think your local area is actually a sleepy little village miles away where the ISP has their head office.

Oh I figured it actually named the place on the website, not just said "in your local area." If that's the case, then I would say there's not much to worry about.

Don't worry about it. Porn sites have developed adverts that read your computers location using an ip address and automatically show people in your area. (or at least they say they are).

it wasnt a pop up tho
it was a link under favourites.

Yes, but i don't mean a popup, adverts can be embedded into a page, like on the left or right, or op, or well whatever.

To me, it really does sound like it is one of these adverts, of course you could just give the link to one of us, and if it says escorts in (somewhere different) you'd know :)

Oh and spyware most certainly can save links in your faves.

Actually its quite likely that a virus or spyware would have a porn site that has escorts in a local area. For example most ips can tell a website roughly where the user is based, it isnt fool proof but most work pretty accuratly. So all the website does, is check the ip address and it knows the area he lives and thus can bring up escorts for the local area.

    It could still be legitimate.

When I look at porn, sometimes I get a link for "girls in Newcastle". My cable IP points to where I am, and where the ISP is- Newcastle. There's nothing sinister about it.

If you can't trust your partner then your relatiionship has more problems then whether he was looking up hookers.

thankyou, thats what i wanted to hear :)

it wasnt that i dont trust him (although i am still a bit edgey after us very nearly breaking up over xmas) its just that if that couldnt happen then what are the chances of him randomly saving it by accident
