Chatrooms

When i was about 15 i used to go on chatrooms a lot, namely chatropolis with a couple of friends from school. Rooms were managable with only 30 per room and i made loads of friends, met my soul mate there (not that she talks to me anymore) and there was a real community, you remembered people and it was great. I somehow grew out of it and around that time it sorta died its death, its like the whole community broke away and grew up, the chat rooms then disappeared to be replaced with just the adult chat rooms.

So yesterday a bit lonely and bored i tried out yahoo chat and my was it dull and impossible to chat to anyone.

Having 80+ people in a room meant reading text was impossible as it was moving so fast and it brought about a number of sterotypical people.

There was many:

'Any hot chicks in here?'
'Im a sexy bloke with a cam, anyone want to exchange pics or have fun?'
'im a sexy girl, come chat to me you big boys!'
'anyone wana chat? I'm bored'

Also wish this i noticed that as soon as a girl entered the room every guy on at the time messaged them with something from hellos to long sentances.

As a bloke no one wanted to chat to me, even when trying to join into conversations in the room. As a test i entered with a girlie name, every single person in the room wanted to chat to me and i had many pm's from guys.

One my female friends met a guy on a wap chat room called fast flirting, i had a look at it and no wonder she met a bloke, being a girl you could have the pick of the litter, every single person in there (120 people+ per room) was a guy with maybe 3 girls in there.

chat rooms are pretty crap really aint they?

Which brings me onto a question, does thesite have an unoffical chat room, such as on irc? Im sure the whole thing would be a lot better than yahoo chat because everyone has something in common and similar interests so you can chat rather than try and be a virtual pimp.

I agree, when I was 16 I used to go on the Karaoke chatrooms in Yahoo and I made SO many friends there. But everyone is all after the Nat King Cole. Sad.

They do have one on IRC but it's an unofficial one, plus it's not my cup of tea because IRC does my tits in.

I'm waiting for the day when they have a chatroom on ze Site itself. :)

Don't use adult chatrooms or any type for that matter. Most people in chatrooms (mostly blokeS) are full of shit and just want a cheap thrill. I used to use AOL chatrooms whern I first got the yet many years ago.

I recently went back on there to make new friend when wife walked out. but its totally different. as you said most people dont want to talk to you if your a guy or new. so i gave up on that.

Haven't been on chatrooms since I was 15 odd, and it's always the same, losers and creeps looking cyber. I think web forums like this are the best way to meet new people, at least people here stick around. Definately more of a commnity feel.

i want to know what happened to microsoft chat, that was great! :D
All dialect was put into a little comic strip form and users could pick what character they wanted to be or make their own - i miss that.
There was also an online game that had a chat room called whats the big idea, players all got asked the same question and whoever answered with the mojority went up a lever on this giant pyramid, whoever got to the top 1st won.

Both of these just disapeared however :(

I do know what you're talking about. I tried a chatroom once and my experience matches yours perfectly. Since there are so many people like the stereotype, some people around us must be like them, right? There are like thousands of people that are the:

-any hawt chik wit cam? :p

Well, I just pity those people. I'm glad I realised how shitty the chatrooms are the first time I tried it.

Do you really meet friends in chatrooms? Then you meet up with them, right? I'm against that.

some people do. why are you against meeting up with people you talk to on the internet?

why are you against meeting up with people you talk to on the internet?

Although I'm not openly against it, I think it's a bit wrong. You can always say that it's safe, you know the person and nothing will happen. If every individual said that, why are there so many people abducted by pedophiles and the like?

Tbh, it's o.k. to meet up with people on the internet. It's just that the statistics are scary. You should just be careful when meeting up, that's all.

And, is it really necessary to meet up with people from the internet? Well, it's fun, but do you need to? Don't you have other people to socialise with? Is it the fact that you're actually meeting up with someone you have never met that makes you do it? I'm just confused...

Being careful if you meet up is the most important thing, in my opinion.

Of course it isn't necessary, but really, why not? If you get on well with people, then as long as you are careful then I really don't see why not.

Met someone quite lovely on the chatroom, but I can't say I'm going to be repeatedly logging back on to it in future!

I havent used one in years, although I did make some net friends on them. I prefer places like this, if you stay around long enough to get to know people more, and its a lot less sleezy then a chat room.

I haven't used a chatroom for years, aside from the occasional time I go into the IRC room. I prefer talking on a message board.

I used to love chatrooms... But yes, most have gone bad. Once in a big while I visit some gaming chatrooms on yahoo, and those tend to be pretty OK. Geek safety!

there are so, so many more people abducted/murdered/attacked by people they didn't meet on the internet.

it's just that you don't hear about many of these cause the media can't sell as many papers with the headline: GIRL SNATCHED BY OFFLINE PERVERT

Indeed. And, if you read about a lot of the stories that do make the press where the Internet is involved, the Internet is just a starting point. Sadly, in a lot of cases, the person involved gets into trouble because he/she is completely stupid after actually meeting the person.

For example, one girl met the person, saw that he was three times as old as he said he was and that he looked completely different to his picture, and yet still agreed to get into his car and go back to his house. Now, excuse me but that has fuck all to do with the internet and everything to do with naivity.

I used to use the Excite chatrooms, way way back. Never met anyone from there, but it was fun. Tried using them again a couple of years later and thought "god, this is boring".

I used to use TheSite IRC but I cba these days tbh.

I used to be a hard core IRCer. It was a nice place to find a clique to join. I would also get a kick out of unfairly kick people before I got slightly more mature.
Some of my best online friends today I met in a chatroom.

I find that blokes usually function better in chatrooms while girls rather wish to move to one-on-one programs like MSN or AIM. I used to prefer chatrooms but now I'm mainly on MSN. Gives me more control over who I talk to and when.
Texting moving fast I don't mind, and I think it's a hell lot easier than having ten+ seperate windows I have to follow.

I don't compare forums with chatrooms, they serve different purposes imho.

Actually I prefer one-on-one conversations too. But my telephone problem that I've had for years (too shy/afraid to ask anyone for their number) has manifested on the internet as not asking anyone if I can add them to my messenger list.

I got bored with being an IRCOp so kind of left IRC for the time being. The whole issue with IRC tended to come across as political, therefore turned my stomach. Maybe soon I shall return.

I used to go in to rooms and contact people and blag them, like send several messages saying "I have worms" to people and see who replies.
