I just found this site - a bit slow but really detailed

http://www.transportdirect.co.uk

Anyone got any other sites, in particular perhaps ones for charter flights to anywhere in the world that have space going?

Transport Direct would be great if it wasn't utterly rubbish.

From my old work it had it as a five minute to walk to the nearest Metro station, which was about 1/4 mile away. Great. If I was Jesus- the 1/4 mile was all a tidal estuary. Erm.

For domestic public transport the best is Traveline.

    Transport Direct is wank.

A local journey planner is best for local journey's, otherwise Traveline is pretty good, for one mode on transport its usually best to stick to the 'specialist'.

Transport Direct Offers some useful things like maps, spell checker, etc

Another useful site for London is

    http://alerts.tfl.gov.uk/

send free SMS text message to your phoen if there is a problem on your usual route home.

I use Transport for London, for any travel needs within London. If you are going by train National Rail Enquiries journey planner is really good.

    RAC Route planner isn't bad

Multimap is a bit easier to use, but the maps aren't always up to date (they still haven't got the completed M60 ring road around manchester for some journeys!!!

Traveline is good for public transport, as pointed out previously.

It still thinks I can walk on water though...

www.expedia.com do half decent searches through most major airlines... but can be a bit costly.

For journeys by car, around most of Europe, check out www.viamichellin.com I used it to get to a tiny fishing villiage in Portugal earlier this year.

I don't know if it's just me, but when I'm driving somewhere far I like getting the map out and planning it all before I go, placing full trust in my keen directional skills. Getting a website to do it for me just takes the fun out of it.

The websites tell you about traffic hotspots and will generally give you an efficient route. I use the RAC website for routes but of course have my trusty road atlas for the car cos I inevitably forget which junction I have to take on each Motorway.

I use the AA Route Planner (which I think is the RAC one everyone is mentioning, but never mind, I can rant about it anyway). It's quite useful, especially for me on my moped as I can tell it to avoid motorways (and various other roads I'm not allowed on because 'i can only go 30mph by law' of course ;)) and it's never not worked for me.

Multimap however, once gave me directions around scotland when i put in a birmingham postcode. Hm.
