Ex Friend Problem!

I had a best friend back at secondary school who i found out when i left to go to college was a nasty piece of work who liked to manipulate me & tried to split me & my closest mate up becuse she was jealous of our friendship.
For the past 2 years I've tried to avoid her at all costs but recently i've found out she has no friends because she treats all her friends the exact same way as she treated me. For some reason i feel sorry for her & I do kinda miss our friendship cuz we had so much in common. Thing is, it was my birthday two weeks ago & yesterday she sent me a belated birthday card. I dont know whether acknowledge that i got it & e-mail her a quick email to say thankyou or just forget i had it.
What do you think??
