Hatfield rail bosses: getting away with manslaughter

Charges against five rail bosses accused of the manslaughter of four people who died in the Hatfield train disaster have been thrown out.
A corporate manslaughter charge against engineering firm Balfour Beatty was also dismissed by the Old Bailey judge.

Pathetic but sadly not surprising.

If only we had the appropriate laws and willingness, as they do elsewhere, to ensure criminal negiglence is punished...

But no matter. The greedy bastards who refused to replace damaged track because it would cost money and eat into their profits are free like the wind- and the victims of the crash and and their families be damned.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

It was a prosecution that should never have taken place anyway.

Be careful what you say. They were acquitted. To say they "got away with it" is actually defamatory.

Morally they certainly got away with it. That they delayed repairs on the track "for as long as possible" (their words) in order to save money is an acknowledged fact. Current British law has very little provision for corporate manslaughter. In countries like France these people would be banged up for good few years- and very rightly so.

Don't believe anything you read in the press.

If I remember correctly that came out of the official enquiry and leaked paperwork from Railtrack.

That private companies delay or neglect maintenance work to save money is a sad fact. They put profits before passengers' interests. And when they put lives in danger and actually cause deaths that could have been easily prevented, the law should provide for those responsible to be punished appropriately.

This is why private companies should have never been allowed near a public service such as the railways.

No, it's why all corporations and other responsibility avoiding legal fictions should be scrapped.
