does anyone know what sorts of ailments/infections or whatever could cause someone to cough up blood clots?

It depends what context you're coughing up blood though.
My advice would be to ring NHS Direct immediately. Their website actually advises anyone who coughs up blood to ring 999, so if this is happening to you, I'd begin to take it pretty serious.
but likely to be an ulcer.
get it checked out asap.
if you are coughing up blood it is pretty serious.
or give nhs dircet a call on 0845 46 47.
unless you mean streaks of blood through phlegm, in which case it might be a chest infection, and seeing a doctor is a fab idea
Is it fresh blood or does it look like coffee ground?
Either way - docs immediately could be nothing serious or could be indicative of something serious
i havent been coughing them up
what was causing it? if you dont mind me asking that is..
Take care

Can I make a suggestion, get a diagnosis from a doctor. I suspect that they have a little more knowledge about these things than most of the people on the boards.
Seriously, why wouldn't you do that.
Sorry, it's the heat, I'm getting crabby
so coughing up blood is not necessarily something like lung cancer or something equally as serious? Did antibiotics clear up your bad chest infection?
if u have read the rest of the thread you will see that i am not coughing up blood
can no-one ask a hypothetical question these days?
ok then, cheers
No. Not unless you get me an ice-cream and a nice cold JD & Coke first.
NB I did apologise at the same time
Please tell me that isn't a picture of your table. If it is I'm on my way round...
if you wake up at night and cough up blood, than it is serious, and i guarantee you to 100% it is a peptic ulcer..., it's a sore in the line of the duodenoum-the lower part of the intestine, dunno which of them :chin:
im afraid i googled it
lungs dear not stomach, and for the last time i never said that ive been coughing up blood
*screams*
You're upset that I won't be round?
BTW Screaming will just make your lungs worse you know
*refrains from screaming theres nothing wrong with my lungs*
And yeh, slightly upset, i could do with some company and a stiff drink!
I would disagree, it would have to be huge amounts of blood for fresh blood to be expelled from the intestinal tract through the mouth. The stomach acid radically alters the blood to form what looks like grounds of coffee. This is called haemetemisis - vomiting up blood whereas haemoptysis is coughing up blood - which is almost always fresh red blood coming from the respiratory tract and upper oesophaus.
.............wait im 12 -.- :thumb: :impissed: :banghead:
awww the wean!!!
