Placement Accomodation

I've got a placement for a year starting in July for IBM in Hursley which is between Southampton and Winchester. Trouble is obviously I don't know anyone down there to live with and I certainly can't afford on my own. Now IBM have sent out a list of other students who'll be on placement so we can arrange to move in together. But I'm not really sure I fancy moving in with people I've never met before in my life.
Really I suppose I'm wanting to know if anyones ever done a placement year, what they did for accomodation and whether you think it's a good idea to move in with absolute strangers.

The advantage is that you'll have instant friends, and somebody to talk to about work who will understand and be interested.
Oh, and it's 'accommodation' you're looking for.
Hmm...maybe I should start concentrating more when I'm posting here.
THats a good point about the friends bit hadn't thought of it like that.
Oh yeah anyone know any good letting agents round those areas as well...preferably Winchester?
But it's a bit random I guess as to if you will get along or whatever.
Yeah I wouldn't be sharing with students other than ones which are also doing the same placement so we'd all have the same sort of lifestyle etc so that wouldn't be a problem.
For lodging do you have to look in local papers and the likes or do estate agents and the likes advertise for lodgers as well?
I think my work sent me a few papers, which had the numbers in them.
The idea of moving in with other students, even if they are strangers, seems workable, afterall isn't that what most of us do in our first year at uni? It's a gamble, but at least you'll all have something in common from the outset.
I think i can empathise with your position in a few ways. I am currently on placement near Northampton and have been living with an antisocial dickhead for half a year now, and am looking for a new place now. I'd advise that you meet as many of the people as you can socially before moving in with any of them, and make sure that you will get on etc. Meeting up for househunting and then going out for a few drinks or something may be a good plan.
Hursley is an awesome place, cos i come from there. Good on ya! I'd probably recommend getting a place in Winchester, as it's the most accesible out of Winch and Southampton for work by public transport, and is a shorter drive too. Living near town centre will make weekends and evening socialising so much easier - don't get a place out in the sticks unless you fancy forking out a fortune in taxi fares after nights out! Check University College Winchester's accomodation boards as well - could help find student friendly accomodation.
Happy hunting! :thumb:
