exeter is shutting down is chemistry dept

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
cause of fact it isnt good enough to get 5 *s only 4, its not going to offer the course to new applicants despite fact there were 5 applicants for one place

much like kings college and queen marys here in london too

exter are goint to replace it with forensic science, which in reality has less job prospects as the course isnt actually detailed enough to be a forensic scientist, they want chemistry students

markets in education, this is what you get:rolleyes:

In the days of funding tied to research, that;s happening more and more.

Durham is in the process of trying to shut down its politics department because it only has 4 stars for research. Which is understandable, given the bturmoil in the department over the last few years: the best researchers won't take jobs there because the VC, Sir Kenneth Cuntman (he who caused the BSE crisis) is trying to shut it.

And it's disgraceful, even our late Chancellor Sir Peter Ustonov has had run-ins with the VC, which shows how bad its got as the Chancellor is merely ceremonial.

It's really blah. The students are outraged. I've been on protests and stuff.

It's disgusting they are shutting down some good departments because of money. Money that has been wasted on other things. New accomidation that it can be argued wasnt actually needed that much probably cost a few million.

Chemistry has been shown to be a net contributor to the economy, I suspect other sciences likewise. Yet Chancellors have used financial reasons for closing down science depts, only to increase student numbers in the Humanities. I've known History and English graduates who struggled to find jobs relevant to their education, but not Science graduates. A Japanese review showed that one quarter of all patents are registered either in the UK or by British abroad, for such a small country, that's an incredible achievement. I don't believe that the British people want to stop contributing to human development, yet the government and the people it appoints to run our universities seem to. Why?

The thing I don't get is that so few places have 5 *, we were looking for a research partner recently based on the last published results and the number of 5* was really limited in each area, not to mention that those universities who did get the grade had next to no real resources for further work

Feels like an excuse to reduce funding to areas that require extensive resourcing more than anything else, though closing politics seems bizarre, I mean how much does a few pipe smokers and an eastern european dissident really cost? (sorry, just kidding - based on my uni experience)

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4063117.stm

basically people think "ill leave it to someone else to worry about"

and economically its dodgy since we need a highly educated specialised workforce really otherwise drugs and chemical and oil companies will move to other countries
