Terrible tragedy, all done because of one selfish cunt who didn't want to wait at a barrier.
How do you know it wasn't a car that broke down on the crossing??
We have the technology to detect if a crossing isn't clear and have an automated system to warn drivers well in advance instead of hammering down the track to see a car, bus, truck, etc. And then slam on the breaks!
Sensors, CCTV Cameras at crossings, etc would all help solve the problem
My guess is that it was some joyriding chav wankers who thought it would "be a laff" to leave their car on the track.
Because lets face it anyone who legitimately broke down could have phoned through to the rail company to stop the trains.

Besides, if the car had broken down the driver wouldn't have been in it, and he would have got out and used the emergency telephone at the crossing. Even that murderer at Great Heck did that.
These crossings are designed to close a significant period of time before the train arrives.
You know, whenever you watch someone in a Hollywood movie drive a car onto a level crossing, the train always ploughs through the car and keeps going. In real life, it only takes something the size of a washing machine to derail a train.
As it always is. However, trying to take a trainload of people with you is particularly wank.
