disk space..

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
ok, my computer keeps popping up with this thingy saying i'm running out of disk space on my hard drive, so i click it and delete some things like temporary internet files, but it keeps popping back up saying theres still not enough room,
so anyway i think its where my computer is saving every single thing i go on and all the graphics etc, my computer never did this before but we just had windows xp installed, ive found tons of crap that its saved like pictures on pages etc can anyone tell me how i can stop it doing this, like do i need to change something on the settings or something, because i really have no clue about computers

Thanks to anyone who can help.

There are a few things you can try:

    1) Go to 'My Computer' and right-click on the C drive, then choose properties. Just underneath the pie chart, click on disk cleanup. This may take several minutes and then finally the computer will bring up a summary of what can be cleared. On the summary, choose all of the tickboxes, but you may want to untick the recycle bin if you're not quite sure of any recycled items you may want to restore.

    2) Stay on the disk properties/summary sheet and move over to 'more options'. Click on system restore and elect to clear all of the restore points apart from the very last one.

    3) Go into the C drive from within My Computer and browse to C:\Windows\Temp.. and empty that foloder. If you press SHIFT+DEL, the deleted items will bypass the recycle bin.

Thankyou for the advice Monserrat, ive done what you said,
Ive deleted the temporary internet files but still everytime i do something else on the net its saves every little thing on each page i go on, how to i prevent it from saving these things all together? because i keep having to delete the files everyday and even when i do it still says theres not a safe amount of free disc space. My computer has only recently been fixed and everything completley deleted off of it so i can't understand how the computer could have all its disc space used up already as i only have a few things on it? would you be able to help me out at all? :)

Leave your temp internet files. They take up practically fuck all space anyway and websites load faster with them.

If you wanna clear up some real space delete some movies or uninstall large programs you don't use (ie, you don't really need Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro).

Disabling System Restore frees up a few hundred megs as well, but I wouldn't really recommend that for you.

If you clear up a few gigs and then moments later the drive is full again then you might have some kind of worm.

Which was I was gonna say Noog. Do a complete virus scan on your PC to rule out virual/worm activity.

Be wary with clearing out your windows/temp folder as I have seen things go a bit wonky here at work with that (But that maybe some app that is running on the W2k PCs here)

What size of hard drive do you have?

Do you have loads of programs installed?

    Piles of MP3's?

    Movies?

    Porn? :p

Delete or backup all the stuff you can really do without.

    Ok thankyou for replying,
i haven't really got anything on the computer compared to what i used to have on here before it was cleaned out, all i really have is downloaded music, but not that much really, my computer held loads more files then this before, i have deleted programs i don't need aswell and still keeps bloody saying it
Kiezo i don't think ive even got photoshop or paint shop pro but i'll have a look, thankyou.
Ninjamaster i haven't got any movies or any porn :p
so i don't no what it can be, i'll give the virus scan a go see if that helps :)

How big is your hard drive?

Goto my computer and properties of c: drive.

Have you emptied your recycle bin? When you 'delete' a file or folder it is actually moved to your recycle bin (Unless you set it not to).

Ok it says my capacity is 4,301,787,136 bytes and then it says my used space is: 4,180,287,488 bytes.
Yep i keep emptying my recycle bin each time, and all files i delete go there then i clear that out. :)

That could be your problem. 4gig hard drive running XP will struggle. I'm guessing you don't have alot of RAM (memory either). 128Mb at a guess?

Once you run out of RAM the OS uses disk space for virutal memory. The less RAM and disk space you have the quicker you will run out of disk space particularily if your using it for alot of things.

Can you invest some cash in an upgrade?

    You have applied SP2 Yes?

    Found this info.

    http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/117140.html

Read the last post. It's says you can safely empty the folder

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

This will free up around 400MB on your PC.
