I just bought a car CD with MP3 player so obviously want o burn some CD's with MP3 music on it. My brand new Optorite Dual Layer DVD Burner however only seems to read and write to my 10 speed TDK CDRW Discs (at 12 speed), my LG and Memorex Disc won't even read in it. yet the same discs work perfectly in my external Freecom USB 2 CD Writer.
Does this suggest the new (less then 1 week old) DVD Writer might have something wrong with it?
or just one of those things? The CD-RW are quite old like 2 years Plus but doesn't explain why it shouldn't be able to read those discs.
No problems burning to DVD-R or DVD-RW with it. Although I did try backing up one DVD using DVD Shrink and it did play back with some sounds problems inthe very same DVD Drive but then tried a different method and also a slower burn and got a perfect copy... so maybe the drive is a bit screwed? I've also sinceput on the latest firmware from Optorite (drive is DD1201)

Have you checked to see if there are any known media compatibility issues with the disks you're trying to use? Have you used a new, recent, disk?
I've just bought a dual layer DVD ReWriter (NEC ND-2510a), and you have to upgrade the firmware if you want it to record on some of the latest DVD-R disks from certain manufacturers. Check to see if there's a firmware upgrade for your drive. (just re-read your post, and I see you have).
I've got a feeling the way these things work is the disc stores info about the disc and it's maximum writing speeds on the beginningof the disc and the drive reads this info, and maybe the old media either doesn't have this info or it does but the Drive maker hasn't bothered to go back in time and add this info to the firmware??
But doesn't explain why it can't read CDRW Disc that my other drive have no problems reading (and writing to)
Have you checked some of the computer, and CD/DVD writing forums out there for more advice. That's all I can think of.
yep.. I started posting to a few of the specialist forums last night
