I'm at London Met and it's soooo not what I expected.
They actually expect us to do work in the first year!!

I'm going to the Student Union Karaoke Night so, we'll see how it goes.

I have to say though, the halls I'm in are the most antisocial piece of crap ever....

yeah gotta say 'Dont believe the hype on this one'

or at least the version of it you have been told. I was well aware during my exams that i both needed to remember that uni was going to be the best experience of my life ever (to keep me working hard) and that there would come a time when i would have to discard this utilitarian image and face up to reality.

    well here it is.

in academic terms it is everything i could have hoped for x10, but the social side is sadly lacking and the great myth that you meet all of your good mates at uni has so far proved to be just that...:)

Hey wheresmyplacebo, have you just started at UCL? Youre right, uni life (in my opinion)is not what its cracked up to be. Im v v busy cos i have a horse too so i travel a lot everyday to ride him. Which department are you in? Im in the biology department and it does get a bit better further on, my first term was the busiest so far though. But as for the freshers events and the union nights ::no:

Yeah, I thought uni was going to be great, where everyone in your halls would be up for a laugh, and you'd all click instantly. Unfortunately my kitchen group don't seem as lively as I expected. Everyone you meet in the union is nice, but sometimes you can't get past "Hi, what's your name, where you from what course are you doing?" Meeting people on the same course as you is better, as you know you'll see those people again, and maybe work with them throughout the year on coursework; you're in the same boat. I've signed up for clubs and societies, but it's all disorientating, with loads of paperwork and no set timetable yet - still on introductory meetings. I suppose you only develop good friends over time. I'm still reserving judgement on how much I like uni life for the moment.

Ugh, chemistry. :yuck: i had to do a chemistry module last year and it was horrid, the lecturers were crap too! (im not a fan of chemistry) Bio is ok, bit disorganised really, i spent ages trying to register today and im still not sorted, half of the modules clash with core subjects and there is such poor communication between departments.
Freshers fayre is crap but last yr i got so much free stuff i might pop along this yr to see whats on offer (freshers included....:naughty: )

You summed that up perfectly, that's exactly how it is at London Met.

I'm now wondering why the hell I decided Uni life was 'me' I'm now starting to regret even going through clearing.
*I just want to see my mummy*

I'm also now looking for other career opportunities just in case the fuckin awful and depressing homesickness doesn't go away....

Anyway, back to the question. Non-campus uni's expecially ones in london are crap for socialising.

However, you do have the best selection of bars, clubs, societies, theatres....etc. anywhere in the world right on your doorstep.

I don't think you should expect too much too soon. Everyone hypes up uni, so people go with high expectations. People don't make best friends in a week.

^^ Yeah, cause Radio 1 have been going on about Freshers week all this week and making it sound so 'envy worthy' but it's really not..

They make out that we're pissed for the wholeweek, comin home a 3am, when in reality the SU's events finished at 10 and have to be up early for the 'induction' week. Which sucks.

    Urgh. Ilora x

at some unis though it is thayt good, was on the fone to my mate at kent and canterbury doing primary school teaching course, and she was a guide for the freshers, and she met loads of new people

i think the problem here is that its london and therefore any stranger talking to you, is either wanting to mug, attack or rape you, therefore you dont talk to strangers yourself

with a bit of effort u can meet some decent people though :D i know a few, most left last year though, and theyre older

I've been on the phone to my mum, and she's doing some homework on me possibly transferring to another uni.
There may be a light at the end of the tunnel then!

For the people here who find it hard to settle in, do you live in large buildings of halls that are about 6 stories high?

I imagined my halls to be like this, but instead I'm in what is basically a big old house with bits added on. It even has turrets, not what I bargained for!

Anyway, my point is that it has 47 people in it compared to the few hundred or so people that are in all the other halls of residence buildings. The much smaller number has meant that everyone in the house at least knows everyone else, if not talking to them regularly. From what I've seen, no one doesn't make friends unless they don't particularly want to.

Now I'm thinking this may be to do with the size and numbers of people, because my uni experience has been pretty good so far.

^^ My halls of residence houses 265 students. It is made up of flats of 5 people, we share a kitchen and bathroom. There's no communal area.

    Yes.

Most of my good friends from uni are from my halls not my course.

I think we work way too hard at UCL- the work load in term time is so over-whelming.

Chemistry (poor you) is very unsociable as a department by comparison to other departments.

Living in halls was good while it lasted but it got a bit intense for me towards the end. I meet my best friends in my halls as we had 36 on each floor (18 per kitchen with one oven and one microwave so you soon get to know each other).

I don't want the work to start.

find out what its like when you get there

a lot of problems are caused by people having all these expectations about something they have never experienced

I would have hated living in halls unless I was with clean gay men or women I think.

I hate mess and dirt, its revolting.

I've been at uni 2 weeks and i'm already on my second visit home. Mostly because I miss my boyfriend and my 2 best friends that still live here and haven't gone to uni yet.

Though in freshers week i was on the phone to my boyfriend in floods of tears most nights. And on the first night i got so drunk i got covered in cuts and bruises and cracked my head open slightly, got me a bit of a rep, but at least it got me noticed!

Uni isn't really living up to what i thought but i just have to keep thinking i need to give it time, wait to settle in. I think (hope) that's when uni life becomes great, not in freshers week.

I like it! You only get out of it what you put into it if you ask me. :)

I'm not living in halls for my first year, got a house with 3 other people.

I was disappointed with Freshers week, a complete waste of money. Paid £25 for a combined ticket for sunday - wednesday. On sunday night there was an al fresco thing where there were meant to be bouncy castles, giant hamster wheels etc. The hamster wheels weren't there and the other things there were crap. It was an outside event and was very very cold and the queue to the bar was about half an hour. Monday night was really good, tuesday was the same as monday and we didn't really like it as much (the original tuesday night event had been cancelled as had wednesdays). They gave us a free voucher for entry to the Student Union Bar another night but that's only worth £4 so it hardly makes it seem worth £25!
