Job interview

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I have tomorrow morning, my second job interview, ever. It's for an admin assistant in the inland revenue. there were 60 applicants and 3 positions, and I got through to the interviews, problem is, I'm hopeless at interviews, for example my other job interview was in burger king, and they turned me down for a job:(

So any tips? They have told me that they will ask for examples of team work, and I'm using scouts and my duke of edinborough course.

The other question I will be asked is for examples of managing my own time. For this one I couldn't think of anything for ages, and then I thought I could use my GCSE exams as an example, because these had to be timed very well.

So I ask again, can anyone give any tips or pointers? Because I'm seriously worried that if I don't get this job I'm missing a big oppertunity.

Can't really help you a great deal as i have only had two interviews myself but one question they will probably ask is why do you want to work there and why do you feel you are suited to it. Good luck!!:)

You could use your DofE award for the managing time bit, though they may think you're being cheeky using the same one twice.

GCSE's are a good example, too. Maybe talk about how you found time to fit in revision/coursework and socialising etc.

Hiya, hope this is not too late

I started as a revenue assistant for the Inland Revenue, you basically need to be able to give some examples of where you have participated in team work, decision making etc, and state what influence you had on the outcome, whether it was sucessful or not etc. As long as your GCSES are fairly recent, use that. Let them know how you planned a revision timetable, apportioned your time between subjects and concentrated on your weaknesses etc. They will love your Duke of Edinburgh, so make sure you use that as an example.

It's a bit of a daft interview, as it has nothing to do with the job to be honest. Don't get me wrong, the job is fine, I have been there 6 years now, the pay is pretty poor but there are benefits like flexi time, days off for the queens birthday and quite a lot of leave. There is also a good pension scheme, and a good trade union.

Good luck, PM me if you have any questions!

thanks for all the info. Because I'm only 17 my GCSE's were only last year. For team work I'll stick to scouts and DoE. For decision making I'm going to say about graphic products and how we had to decide on everything from materials, to design, how it would stand out, etc.

For managing time I'll use my GCSE's, revision time tables, homework, coursework. etc.

I'm feeling a lot more confident about this interview now, so thanks to all of you:D

Right. Having just done my first interview and having got the job, i think i can safely give you some hints.

Firstly - overdress. If you normally have lots of piercings and your hair in a pink mohawk, get rid of the lot. Wear a suit if you can, make yourself look fairly normal but smart. Presentation is one of the first things they will look at.

Second, the buzz word at the moment is team work. Mention that in high school, you enjoyed lessons where you worked with others to acheive a common goal etc.

Third, with regard to the question on time management - focus on stuff like coursework times - if you have anything in your record of acheivement such as comments on how you always got your homework and cwk in on time, show them. Use anything you can if thats what they want out of you. For example - if you have anything to do with detentions in your ROA, put that you rarely got detentions as you were organised with coursework deadlines. Maybe exxagurate ever so slightly but do not lie, as you'll probably be found out.

Fourthly, they'll be able to pick up on your nervousness straight away, my mates mum works for a building society and says she knows exactly from looking at someone what their attitude to the job will be. Try to Look fairly apprehensive but don't sit there with a huge grin on your face. If you look utterly bored, then they'll think thats what your attitude to work in general is.

A lot of information, hopefully some of it will sink in, basically they won't want to employ someone who has to deal with the general public if they have a giant pink afro complete with yellow spots etc.

Most of all, try not to be too nervous, but nervousness is part of it after all. And remember that you have no power over them whatsoever, so try not to look too sour if they say something a bit over the mark about you, your appearance etc.

    Good luck :)
