First of all, calm down. Panic helps no one.
You say it's only a filling, right? If I understand correctly, that's when they have to fill your tooth with something to replace the part that was lost, isn't it? I'm just asking to be sure I understand.
I have a fear of needles too, but it's more about the idea of a little hole in my skin than the pain. My own doctor says that unless that tooth hole is so deep that it reaches the nerve, you don't need anesthetic. Actually, I've had lots of fillings and he just takes care to do it little by little so that it won't hurt much. So ask first the doctor (and yourself) if you can stand the pain of this. It wasn't as much as I'd think.
But even if anesthetic is necessary, the kind dentists use isn't that much like others. I don't know what bcg is, but I'm going to have one of my teeth removed and the dentist said that the needle barely pierces the skin, so I think it can be handled.

I hope I was of a little help for your courage. But I'll say again that getting yourself detached from the world is the answer to nothing, so don't even think about using a drug for this, especially if it's illegal.

just wanted to say that that's very easy to say, but when you're that scared, it's very hard not to panic. an irrational fear is just that. irrational. she's probably well aware that getting an injection isn't going to hurt, or that nothing bad will happen. but it's an irrational response. you can't help it.
btw i was just wondering if i was sooooooo stoned on cannabis would they refuse to see me even if they didnt know i was stoned. but just thought i was extremely relaxed

    no.

if you're terrified, there are things they can do. you can have gas and air, which does help, but you're still aware of what's going on, so if you're really really panicky, it only helps to a point.

secondly they can give you IV sedation, but in your case they'd have to sedate you to give you the IV, so that doesn't really help.

thirdly, you could be prescribed a sedative by your doctor in pill form. this'll chill you right out - in a 'couldn't panic if you tried' kinda way, and is a lot more legal than getting stoned. :p

have a look through the yellow pages to see if any nearby dentists specialise in anxious patients. there should be loads. you're not the other person to have this fear, by any means.

Oh I know how you feel. I am sh*t scared of needles too. When I had to get an injection for a filling my dentist used a freezing gel first that numbed my gum so that I wouldn't feel the needle go in and also he did it so that I didn't see the needle go in either when he gave me the injection. I am sure if you explain to the dentist your fear he will do something to help you.

one other thing. i'm scared of the dentist too, but it's not the needles that get me, it's generally have people fishing about in my mouth, and those suction things.

at least needles are a common phobia. when i first went to my dentist (who is really good, and makes me feel as relaxed as i can, considering he's still a dentist) he said 'how can you be afraid of needles when you have your tongue pierced?'. i had to explain that i wasn't scared of needles, i was scared of the sucky things, and he looked at me like i was mental.

I was a dental assistant for a while, it was so cool helping with the injections and then watching teeth being pulled out :D

with those sucky things, i think it's more the noise they make that worries me! my dentist injected my gum for me to have a filling without me even knowing; i'm kinda glad 'cause i would of panicked.

When the dentist said I needed some fillings I jumped outta the dentist chair and ran outta the dentists crying in a panic. I'm terrified of having injections. The dentists arranged something with the local infirmary so I had them there instead as they would use numbing cream, etc, I was too terrified to go though and didn't turn up.

Went to a new dentist and they didn't give me fillings but gave me the fill in things instead which stops fillings from developing. They put like this white stuff in my tooth which went hard and stopped everything from developing. No needles. No pain. I was a relieved!

Maybe you could ask your dentist for that? Have you explained to your dentist that you are afraid of injections?

i had the white filling things andhe sed the whole is in the tooth with the white filling thing but ive had no pain there and therre doesnt look like a hole either! i reckon hes just after money!

I feel for you, i really do

I hate needles (although i've maganed to conquer that)
AND i hate fillings(had 8 done)!!! and i'm 22 so you've nothing to be ashamed of

first up, i'd say if your dentist thinks you need to get over your fear of needles, i'd be looking at changing my dentist if possible

I had two small fillings at my old dentist and they were only like tiny ones in the side of my molars, i never went back to him, he was crap.

My new dentist, knows i have these fears and is really good, he's very reassuring, tells me exactly what he's doing so i don't jump or get suprised, talks to me and helps keep me calm.

Also what i do when i have to have fillings, i tend to concentrate on my heart and just think about keeping my heart rate at a steady rythem, it distracts me from whats going on and also keeps my heart rate down and that stops me gettign as anxious.

all i can say is just try and keep calm, your dentist will be trying to make things as easy as possible i'm sure

I'm sure you should be able to find a dentist that will knock you out for the fillings. I had my wisdom teeth taken out, I said I wasn't up for local anaesthetic or sedation and that was it...they booked me into a nearby hospital for general anaesthetic! It wasn't like I had to put on some huge act to get my own way either, I just said no and that was it...job done! My friend just had her fillings done in hospital as well as she has a fear of needles

Some dentists do sedation, you CAN get it if you`re an NHS patient but it costs about £100. My partner had it when he had a load of work done.

On the same subject I had a wisdom tooth extracted yesterday and its sore as fuck. :(
