In the UK, parties aren't allowed to spend more than £20 million pounds on their election campaigns.

Preventing sleaze is one thing, but why should ALL donations be registered?

    I thought it was only with donations over 5 grand...

    But in answer to your question, I think it is a very good idea that all significant donations be declared. Someone prepared to donate large sums of money to a political party should be open about it. It is for the good of democracy, especially if the donors in question have business interests.
